Suicide attack on CIA agents 'was planned by bin Laden inner circle'

US intelligence officials believe the suicide bomb attack that killed seven CIA officers in Afghanistan last month was planned with the help of Osama bin Laden’s inner circle, raising fears that the al-Qaeda leader is enjoying a lethal resurgence.

The attack, carried out by a Jordanian triple-agent whom the CIA believed was about to divulge the whereabouts of al-Qaeda's deputy leader, could not have taken place without the prior knowledge and assistance of the Haqqani network, US officials believe. The powerful Taleban faction is thought to be shielding bin Laden.

Against all normal security protocol, al-Balawi was allowed onto the CIA's Forward Operating Base Chapman, in Khost province, without undergoing a security check.

He was then permitted access to over 10 CIA employees - an extraordinarily high number to congregate around an Islamist informant.

AQ used a similar ruse when trying to assassinate the top Saudi counter-terror official.

US Anti-Terror Authorities Missed Writing on the Wall - in Jeddah (Debka)

Prince Muhammad in Nayef, Saudi Arabia's top counter-terror executive, escaped with light injuries from Abu Khair's attempt to kill him at his Jeddah palace on August 27, 2009, thanks mainly to the partial detonation of the explosive materials hidden in his underpants, a glitch repeated in the Nigerian bomber's attempt.

The assassin gained entry to the most heavily fortified and guarded palace in the Red Sea town of Jeddah by convincing Saudi agents in Yemen that he was ready to switch sides - but only if he could discuss terms face to face with Prince Muhammad.

They did in fact hold several meetings - not in the palace but out in Najran province on the Yemen border. The data he handed over was solid enough to convince the Saudi prince that he was on the threshold of his government's biggest breakthrough in its war on al Qaeda.

So when Abu Khair offered to bring with him to the Jeddah palace a list of al Qaeda high-ups in Yemen willing to defect to Saudi Arabia, the prince not only agreed to the venue but sent his private jet to pick him up from Najran.

I wish there was a way to invade Pakistan. So sick of their deadbeat excuses and ass-dragging. We could probably use the nukes as well.

Can you say MOLE? This meet must have been based on hard evidence this asset would give out high level intel. Very few could have been in the loop to leak who would be their and it took high level prompting to get all of those agents in the same place including our Jordanian brothers. Everything and everyone in this unit should be evaluated and all people should be reviewed. I am sick, The people we lost here had been at the terror desk for many years and cannot be replace. Sad Sad day in the company.

Sorry but if this is the level of 'professionalism' displayed by CIA agents in a war zone we're f****** doomed.

This was beyond careless, past stupid, way into the territory of gibbering insanity.

There is a way. What we lack is the will.

I agree and am amazed that a group could be so seduced by this asset to be lead into such a trap. Something smells to me like a high level request to not search this scum.

Although it sounded absolutely crazy that they would allow this to happen, added details reduce their culpability. On Morning Joe today, Scarborough repeated what a few of his contacts in the intelligence community told him.

The bomber was allowed into the base in his car, and got out. Three CIA agents coming to greet him noticed his hand in his pocket...they told him to remove his hand and he then blew them up. It did not happen in a room, but outdoors. And remember, this guy had given them some excellent info in the past.

Thanks for posting.

Disturbing if true.

Condolences to all asymmetric warriors at CIA, their families and their friends. America’s finest. R.I.P.

“...raising fears that the al-Qaeda leader is enjoying a lethal resurgence.”

Isn’t this the exact opposite of what was supposed to happen once we started killing them with kindness?

It appears we are starting to hear different scenarios develop on this one. The we read about your other UK post where the Saudi Prince was blown up using similar tactics.
Probably nothing much has really changed within the Pakistani military/intel since Musharaf left.
They only cooperate to a given level when it benefits them directly in cash handouts and when going against their local Taliban and associated terrorist groups who do damage directly to Pakistan.
