The Department of Education should be dismantled immediately. The entire work force fired. Ever since its establishment (believe under Carter) the quality of U. S. education has gone down the tube. The federal governmemt has no business in the education process. It is up to each State and local district. Why? Among many reasons, if the federal government screws up, which it almost always does, the entire Nation is affected. It the States were in charge there might be a few States out of sync with the real world, but only a few would be affected. And think of the money that would be saved.
