I am curious and really don’t know the answer. Do hairdressers get tips? If so I bet that is what they are after.

They do when they cut my hair, but lots of people don't bother to tip these days. YMMV. But I think your guess is correct. As for the part about auditing the parents, they probably thought support transfers to her were another possible explanation - which is legal up to $10,000 a year, beyond that it is supposed to be reported as income, but often isn't. Still it all seems typically excessive and heavy handed...

Do hairdressers get tips? If so I bet that is what they are after.I know a girl who cuts about 20 men's hair daily, five days a week.
She gets $2-$3 tip per haircut on average.
So figure there's 261 work days during the calendar year, since she's full time.
Multiply 261 days x 20 haircuts x $2.50 for each tip and you'll come up with more than $13,000 in tips annually.
When you add $13K to the $19K this woman reported, she'd be over $30K annually easily.

Hairdressers do get tips, but it’s not a majority of their income. This story makes me ill.
