Suozzi concedes county executive race (GOP assumes total control of Nassau county, NY)

Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi conceded electoral defeat to his Republican challenger Legis. Edward Mangano Tuesday afternoon in a televised news conference from the ceremonial chamber of the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola. Some political observers called it a stunning setback for an articulate, aggressive politician who has had ambitions for higher office.

The two-term Democratic incumbent was trailing Mangano of Bethpage, by 377 votes Tuesday in unofficial results.

It was a narrow margin that proved a gaping chasm.

He said he had called Mangano earlier to congratulate him.

Mangano did not immediately return telephone calls for comment on the concession.

"I'm very proud off this government and what has been accomplished these last eight years," Suozzi said in his news conference. He stressed his administration had created "a metamorphosis" in Nassau County government, transforming it from one considered "the worst-run government in the nation" to one of the best.

He talk about bond ratings rescued from near-junk-bond status to ones considered the most stable in 15 years - a status affirmed this week in assessments by Moody's, Fitch and Standard & Poor's.

In another development, Democratic incumbent Comptroller Howard Weitzman also conceded defeat Tuesday to Republican challenger George Maragos. In a written statement Weitzman said: "I would like to congratulate George Maragos on his election as Nassau County Comptroller. Although the results of the election are not what I hoped for, it has been an honor to serve the people of Nassau County for 8 years and I am proud of what I have accomplished as Comptroller."

I thought we couldn’t win the NE. At least that’s what the pundits have told us.

Unlike so many other Dems, Suozzi acts honorably.

Isn’t this a liberal county? Hopefully the GOP does a good job there.

Upset win of the year.

Suozzi was however a decent guy, unlike your average democrat.

Maybe I'm not up to speed on things in Nassau County, but I don't see this as such a big win for the GOP because Suozzi wasn't your typical leftist anyway. I think a lot of Nassau County's problems are institutional in nature, not political.

Having said that, it's worth noting that the GOP was able to turn the tide in two key suburban counties (Nassau and Westchester) that have turned pretty "blue" in the last 15-20 years.

It was an anti-tax, anti-incumbant vote, combined with an absence of Obama coat-tails. All of this is a good omen for 2010 for the GOP.

What’s more, is that no one saw it coming. Should send a shiver up spine of all incumbants. Even guys who think they are safe may be gonners before they know it. Like a lot of Blue Dogs.

And the rat comptroller too! For once a recount doesn't result in theft.

Good news is our people won. Bad news is, they have Zero and the rodents crap economy to be saddled with (and unlikely to be resolved anytime soon).

Republicans picked up both the County Executive and County Controller posts. In addition, Democratic Nassau County Legislator David Mejias, who ran for Congress in 2006, has also conceded defeat.

I’m from Nassau County and Suozzi is your typical NY Democrat. That’s pretty left.

Glad to see him go.

Mejias conceded, too? We won all three Nassau races that went into a recount. What a great cap to a fantastic election night!

So, who’s going to run against that lib Carolyn McCarthy?
