The man sought for questioning in the execution of four Lakewood police officers was granted clemency in 2000 by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and released on bail just six days ago on a child rape charge in Washington state.

Maurice Clemmons, the 37-year-old Tacoma man being sought for questioning in the killing this morning of four Lakewood police officers, has a long criminal record punctuated by violence, erratic behavior and concerns about his mental health.

Nine years ago, then-Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee granted clemency to Clemmons, commuting his lengthy prison sentence over the protests of prosecutors.

I hope it turns out to be tripe, but I remember Huckabee taking flak for granting clemency to some thugs. So this is what happens?

A real shame. Pray for the officers families and the remaining force and the folks in Lakeland.

“After seven months of fighting the governor to keep murderers behind bars, I am still continually amazed at his actions and words regarding clemency. He just doesn’t get it.”

___ Jegley cites numerous examples of Huckabee’s freeing felons who go on committing more crimes and wind up back in prison.

___ Maurice Clemmons received a 35-year sentence in the early 1990s for armed robbery and theft. His sentence was commuted in May 2000, and he was let out three months later.

___ The following March, Clem-mons committed two armed robberies and other crimes and was sentenced to 10 years. You’d think they’d keep him locked up after that, but no: He was paroled last March and is now wanted for aggravated robbery.

___ If Huckabee decides to set these criminals free, Jegley says, at least “he ought to give an accounting. I can’t imagine why in the world they’d want them released from jail. There’s a good reason we’re afraid of them. The sad truth is that a significant number of people re-offend.”

Nine years ago, then-Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee granted clemency to Clemmons, commuting his lengthy prison sentence over the protests of prosecutors.

“This is the day I’ve been dreading for a long time,” Larry Jegley, prosecuting attorney for Arkansas’ Pulaski County said Sunday night when informed that Clemmons was being sought in connection to the killings.

Yep... except if you read the story you find out the hype is probably correct.

I’d love to defend Huckabee but it might not have been a bad idea to look at this one a little closer before turning him loose on society. Looks like there are a lot of folks responsible for this one, though.

I don’t recall any reference mentioned on the Sunday morning news/pundit shows. And I watched the one with Huckabee on it.

"If you're wondering how Gov. Huckabee's hundreds of clemencies compare with neighboring states, get ready for a shocker.

"Huckabee leads the pack.

"He has issued more commutations and pardons than all of the six neighboring states combined."

That is from an article in the Arkansas Leader that will blow your mind.

Here's the link.

I can’t imagine why in the world they’d want them released from jail.

This is not new information. It is, however, one of several reason I would never want Huckabee as President. He is lower on my list than McCain and John Kerry and that is pretty low.

“Huckabee has his Willie Horton moment.”

If this Clemmons turns out to be the shooter this will be at least the second Willie Horton moment for ol’ Huckster. The name escapes me but another one of the fools he pardoned murdered a woman in Missouri I believe. And I would further bring up this Clemons POS also raped a child. This is exactly WHY we don’t need Huckabee as a Republican candidate in 2012, there’s all kinds of stuff out there on him. The MSM know that too which is exactly why they’re trying (already) to manipulate him into being the Republican candidate.

I never liked Huckabee. He is soft on crime and has pardoned many violent criminals. He also supports amnesty and higher taxes. It will be interesting to see if he accepts responsibility for this tragedy or just tries to slime his way out of it.

From 1996 through July 2004, Arkansas had more clemencies than all neighboring states combined.

Huckabee has his Willie Horton moment.

Not quite. We're talking 4 dead cops here. If the shooter is the guy Huckabee granted clemency to...His political career will also be very dead.

Four dead police officers in exchange for clemency...

I think Mr. Huckabee can forget about a future in the White House.

Does Huckabee’s record on granting clemency to murderers and rapists qualify him for the RINO label?

I’m pullin’ for Palin at this point if she is nominated, but please let us know of else you trust as a true conservative. And thanks, again for hosting this site.

released on bail just six days ago on a child rape charge in Washington state.

With his known record, why the hell would any judge allow him to bail out on child rape charges?
