Live Thread: Senate Debate and Cloture Vote on Motion to Proceed to Debate ObamaCare
Saturday, November 21, 2009 | Kristinn

Posted on 11/21/2009 9:43:50 AM PST by kristinn

C-SPAN 2 is carrying the Senate floor debate live this afternoon.

The Democrats control the floor right now. Earlier, Republican Senators Judd Gregg, Kit Bond, Jeff Sessions and David Vitter gave good speeches and dialogues on the budget-busting effects of ObamaCare.

Maria Cantwell is speaking now. Mary Landrieu is excpected to speak shortly.

The cloture vote is scheduled for 8 p.m. EST tonight.

-- From what I am reading it is a vote to start debate not end debate because the Reid bill never was in Committee so this vote may be necessary to get it on the floor. --

There are only a few species of bill that aren't subjected to agreement to take up. Conference committee stuff (which means the Senate has already taken up and debated the bill) and budgets. Other than that, every bill, whether it comes out of a Senate committee or not, is subject to debate on the question of bringing it to the Senate floor. Everything subject to debate is also subject to a vote. So, this bill is NOW at the "motion to proceed to the bill" stage, which is being debated. There was a request to vote on the motion to proceed, and the GOP objected to taking up the bill. This cloture vote is to get the bill on the floor for debate. There will be future objection and future cloture votes as the bill is debated and moves toward final passage.

This bill shouldn’t even been written!

it wasn't - harry and rahm locked themselves in a room, donned their garb. drew a pentagram, lit candles and called for satan to bestow the bill upon them

I know..DiDi. I'm just sick of all the BS being thrown at the public wrt this bill.

Blanche Lincoln is STILL getting attention by saying she hasn't yet made up her mind on the final vote. She's an attention grabbing Liar.

time to call out the other 60 when (or if) those traitorous wretches show up back home over the holiday.

Murray’s up in 2010.

Cantwell’s next.

-- So this is not to stop debate but to begin debate? --

The subject of debate changes. Right now the question is "Should we take up the bill?" Later, the questions will be "Should we pass this amendment?" and "Should we pass this (amended) bill?"

Every question (some exceptions, none pertain here) is subjected to unlimited debate. When the leader asks for consent to end debate and vote, any Senator can object, in effect, demanding unlimited debate. Cloture is used to limit the debate, on whatever the question is at the moment.

It was just me, with a grocery store at the end of my block (and I shopped every other day) with a half a block walk to my Apt.

As a single it was great, I no longer went to flea markets and swap meets to buy stuff I didn't need, took dates in rides in Town-cars that avoided the DUI thing, and got a lot of reading done.

Last time that I lived that way was in junior high, and I hated having to take public transport.

As an Army brat, I guess I was born on the move. I wanted my own wheels from the earliest time I can remember. Dad got me my first Schwinn when I was just five, and by the end of the first day, I had figured out how to ride it.

From that point forward in life, I was never without some form of wheeled transport of my own. Got my first car when I was sixteen, and have never gone without motor transport since. I don't think I'd know how to function without it.

Yes, baby fat “mary land drew” is the perfect Ho to speak for the state of Louisiana.

You can buy her cheap as we all know she sells her services to the bidder with the most cheese.

If we could follow the money in this bitches public service she would be in Angola!

Sarah will not save the country . We need an historic leader. I like her but she is not the answer.
By 2012 we will be way beyond saving anyway .

Well I hear Mary was bought for a cool 100 million. For that kind of cash, I imagine she can turn some pretty amazing tricks. Might want to visit her State and see for myself.

I repectfully disagree. She is the historic leader that will in fact make drastic changes once elected.

In any event, we are in a perilous downslide and sadly half of the country is asleep and will land in the pit before they wake up. Will be too late then!

He should be forced to sign up first and every member of his family to the same 'health care' that he is trying to force down our throats!

I say a Civil War will come to this country or at best a French Revolution if we do not have checks and balances come to congress and we get a president who will uphold the constitution.

In fact we are at the early stages of a revolt in America. This is the calm before the storm.
