CMS: House health bill will hike costs $289B [discredits Democrats’ assertions will lower costs]

The House-approved healthcare overhaul would raise the costs of healthcare by $289 billion over the next 10 years, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan, independent Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

The long-awaited report sent to lawmakers late Friday by the Department of Health and Human Services should serve as a "stark warning to every Republican, Democrat and Independent worried about the future of this nation," Ways and Means ranking member Dave Camp (R-Mich.) said in a statement on Saturday.

Though House Republicans pressed to have this analysis completed before the lower chamber voted on the Democrats' sweeping healthcare reform bill last week, it was not ready until late Friday.

Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) highlighted the report on Saturday in a written statement. "This report once again discredits Democrats’ assertions that their $1.3 trillion government takeover of health care will lower costs, and it confirms that this bill violates President Obama’s promise to ‘bend the cost curve.’ It’s now beyond dispute that their bill will raise costs, which is exactly what the American people don’t want."

Republicans predicted that if the CMS numbers were available last Saturday when the House voted on Speaker Nancy Pelosi's healthcare bill, the slim majority that supported the measure 220-215 could have been reversed.

“This report confirms what virtually every independent expert has been saying: Speaker Pelosi’s health care bill will increase costs, not decrease them. I hope my colleagues in the Senate heed CMS’ findings and refuse to rush ahead until any bill under consideration can be certified to actually reduce health care costs," Camp said.

damn I wish this would have been offered prior to the vote but would have it made a difference I doubt it -- it does show the dems are SO out of touch and will pass anything just to say they passed it .....

So to Democrats, a $300 billion dollar increase in spending is “savings”?

Plus everybody knows the Dems have underestimated costs by a factor of six. (based on other gov’t programs)

For a real world estimate of what it would cost, just look at Medicare where the cost is $12,000 per person per year. The plan the Rats passed would eventually cover about 100 million people. $12,000 X 100 million = $1.2 TRILLION PER YEAR.

Actually, yes. When you're tossing around trillions for "stimulus" and "bailouts" and lord knows what else, a mere $300 billion is like chump change for them.

Yep because their VOODOO math says that Health Care costs are doubling every year so they can now claim that if they only increase quarterly every year that is an overall savings.

It is the same B.S. ploy used to hypnotize the ignorant in America.

And Obama is worried about the cost of the troops to protect our force. The man is as close to a jackal as anyone I have ever seen.

I think Pelosi would have gotten the votes by hook and by crook. Yes, the report would have caused constituents to amp up the pressure on their reps (representatives) to vote no, but in the end, the reps would have ignored it. The reps were willing to ignore that pressure even in light of the election a couple weeks ago, so I don’t think this report would have changed anything. This bill was driven like a force of nature or weather. I don’t think anything except sheer numbers could have stopped it. Even if Hoffman had been elected and turncoat liar Cao had not turned, it still would have passed. There was no hesitation by Pelosi and her thugs to sacrifice some rat seats to get this bill passed. It will be such wonderful poetic justice if this flops in the senate and there is no bill.

Exactly and not one single reporter not one in the media has asked him to claify what is more important Mr. president to get the Healthcare bill done or to get it done right.

His insistance that this be done so he can wave it around as a political accomplishment is the Problem, the American people want something done but not this massive intrusion...

So whats more important getting something done? Or getting it done right...

Heck the thing doesn’t even go in effect for 4 years...

I bet he already has it written in to his SOTU address...

Excellent post bustinchops, thank you, your thoughts are shared by many, Pelosi doesn't haven't any ethics and she is part of the minority of her party, the progressive movement that is demanding that this be passed.

With that said, the abortion/right to life issue just may blow this bill out of the congress. The women who are ticked off that the Stupak amendment outdid the right to abortion movement has angered that segment of the progressive caucus.

I believe many will go beyond rhetoric and vote against the bill if the Stupak amendment remains, so it is possible that either caucus could bring this bill to a “don't pass go, do not receive 200.00”.

The progressives, the liberals, the conservative democrat's they are fighting amongst themselves and whoa nelly it is so much better than fighting with the republicans or the republican's fighting amongst themselves.

I think I am just going to make some popcorn and pull up a chair there is going to be one hell of a show on the other side of the aisle.

CMS is already costing untold dollars in some of the regulations that are now in effect. Somebody is getting paid big bucks to think up more paperwork which takes time away from patient care.

This report confirms what virtually every independent expert has been saying:....

We need to vote into office independent experts from now on and screw the political party money shoveling machine.

The bill is DOA. Now its really DOA on arrival on the Senate with the new CMS cost estimates. I don't see how the Democrats can make the math work and the moderates are not going to vote for a bill that increases health care costs over time.

You bring up excellent points, Obama hasn't seen a plane he doesn't like, or a speech he just can't seem to avoid giving.

But, when it comes to the issues of the American people he has a tin ear, it is obvious they do not look at the polls, if they did they would realize that they are losing independents, the American folks are more conservative and liberals are only about 20% of the American population.

If I saw these number's I would think long and hard about what it is this country needs, not what the democrat's or more importantly the progressives want.

The progressives argue, we have the congress and the White House and damned if we haven't waited 4 decades to get these issues near and dear to the progressives passed but Obama was elected with moderates and independents AND he is losing them by the numbers every day.

You are right health care doesn't go into effect for 4 years, but taxes start once the bill is signed, and the final bill wont be fully operational for 10 years.

I know I would risk more seats as a conservative/republican but I have tell you I want this country to have jobs, the economy to improve the dollar to have more value and if those improved Obama might get the credit in the next election.

But, my fellow Americans lives are at stake.

Obama needs to hunker down in the WH, start solving the big issues of the country that are immediate, deciding to support our troops in Afghanistan and perhaps passing small less threatening health care reform that would be more tolerable to the American people.

Again thank you for the excellent post.

It would have been great if the vote failed, but since they held the vote, all these Dems are going to face brutal town halls over the Thanksgiving and Christmas break over their votes.

“Though House Republicans pressed to have this analysis completed before the lower chamber voted on the Democrats’ sweeping healthcare reform bill last week, it was not ready until late Friday.”

It’s not a healthcare reform bill. It’s a bill that will abuse both the healthcare system and the actual medical health of individual citizens, thus it is a Health Abuse bill.
