JERUSALEM – Israel displayed for the first time Wednesday a collection of rare coins charred and burned from the Roman destruction of the Jewish Temple nearly 2,000 years ago.

About 70 coins were found in an excavation at the foot of a key Jerusalem holy site. They give a rare glimpse into the period of the Jewish revolt that eventually led to the destruction of the Second Jewish Temple in A.D. 70, said Hava Katz, curator of the exhibition.

The Jews rebelled against the Roman Empire and took over Jerusalem in A.D. 66. After laying siege to Jerusalem, the Romans breached the city walls and wiped out the rebellion, demolishing the Jewish Temple, the holiest site in Judaism.

The coins sit inside a glass case, some melted down to unrecognizable chunks of pockmarked and carbonized bronze from the flames that destroyed the Temple.

(IsraelNN.com) A very special exhibition opens next week in Jerusalem, revealing to the public for the first time all of the ancient coins uncovered in excavations at the foot of the Temple Mount.

The exhibit was organized by the Israel Antiquities Authority and the East Jerusalem Development Company with funding from the William Davidson and Estanne Fawer Foundation. It is intended to be the first of several exhibitions to be presented at the Davidson Center in the Jerusalem Archaeological Garden.

Interesting. Finding the coins “below” the Temple is not clear to me. Does below mean adjacent to and down hill from? It must.

Anyhow, it reminds me a little of James Michener’s “The Source.”

end of the article at above link

The exhibition comes at the same time that the Arab world is escalating its campaign to persuade the world that Judiasm has no roots in the Temple Mount.

Not meaning to promote any particular website, but you can buy proof of these coins from http://www.biblicalmites.com/. I have some. Inconvenient truth.

Well, Bar Kochba ignored Jerusalem and built up Betar because it was better from a military standpoint, which is why Rabbi Akiva broke with him.

Scratch that. I hadn’t read the article, so didn’t know which revolt they were talking about.
