NY-23 2009: America has changed [Hoffman concedes defeat to Owens]
Doug Hoffman for Congress ^ | 2009-11-04

Posted on 11/03/2009 9:58:12 PM PST by rabscuttle385

America has changed, and you have helped. Although we did not succeed in winning this election, we have succeeded in making sure political parties and special interests no longer take the people for granted. I believe we have sent a powerful message and laid the groundwork for future conservative campaigns.

I congratulate Bill Owens on a hard won victory. In our tradition of free elections, our country continues. And although Bill Owens has won, I believe America is turning the page to a new dawn.

The ideas of freedom, sound fiscal management and citizen government have sprung back into our consciousness. Our founding fathers would be proud of New York 23. It was here that our principles, those that have been the foundation of our nation, came back to life with a vengeance. And it was here that the people rose up against the political bosses who tried to impose their will. It was here that people reached out to control their own destinies again.

Despite the election results, I am optimistic for our future, because now I know that I am not alone in wanting to repair our great nation. Throughout this campaign I have been inspired by the outpouring of support and the intensity of that support.

I’ve met many different people in this campaign, from many walks of life and many professions; each with a different personal story to share. Yet we are all united in the belief that by participating in democracy, we could inspire change.

I urge that no one feel defeated, for this was only one of many elections. We came close, we put our agenda in front of the nation and the nation took notice. The worse thing we could do now, is not continue forward. Next year there are other elections and other candidates who have drawn inspiration from our efforts.

I would like to thank all of you who placed your faith in me, who worked tirelessly and shared your enthusiasm with those around you. You are all patriots, you have all stood up for your country and I am honored to stand among you.

Thank you,

51% voted AGAINST Owen/Obama. That's all that matters for now. Get ready for 2010!

...because we’ve lost the fight in our own party that needs to take place before we can win on the national stage...

The war is not lost.

Tonight, one battle in that war was lost.

The war continues so long as it is fought hard and fought well by good people.

This is not a time to quit.

This is a time to continue fighting.

so if she would have been worse how is this a defeat?

There was always going to be one of three outcomes:
Scozzofava
Owens
Hoffman

If she’s the worst, how is what happened tonight a defeat?

Before we see the exit polls we don’t really know what went down. Did all the indy’s go for Owens? Did Dems outnumber reps? What effect did her endorsement of Owens have. How many early ballots were wasted?

Of course it would have been nice to win, but the wins in VA and NJ were much more important.

Obama’s man Corzine got thrashed. After he went all in for him. To a pro-life conservative who worked for George W Bush no less. In deep blue NJ. Despite being outspent 3-1. Every dem incumbent sees that.

That’s what matters.

“We lost bigtime tonight. The other races were meaningless compared to this one.”

Yep. Virginia going red is hardly a surprise as it only went blue for BO. The NJ race was won by a moderate, and in NY 23 the conservative lost even with the endorsments of nationally ranked conservatives. This will just encourage the GOP leadership to run moderates using this race as proof that conservatives can’t win. The dems picked up what had been a solid GOP seat. Governors don’t get a vote on health care bills or cap-n-trade bills.

I’m not quitting. I’m discouraged and I fear that the battle within cannot be won in time to coalesce for 2010. Unfortunately, I’m probably right. Though, I’ll most likely stop talking about it and try my butt off just to be disappointed again on the first Tuesday of November in 2010.

Can’t argue with that. He could have gotten a recount if he wanted one. That would have parlayed a week at the very least.

2010. If the GOP gets behind him and not some RINO he could take the seat.

Not that I’m looking for company in misery, but thank you for seeing what I’m saying here. We lost a HUGE battle here tonight. I had high hopes for this race and I’m devastated that it will now be used against us.

He could have gotten a recount if he wanted one.

And who would have funded it? The RNC? Maybe Scazzofava? LOL.

"We lost bigtime tonight. The other races were meaningless compared to this one. Winning this was imperative to teaching the GOP a lesson that it refuses to learn. I think that any meaningful win in 2010 is dead at this point, because we’ve lost the fight in our own party that needs to take place before we can win on the national stage."

I think you are looking at this the wrong way. Early indications are that Hoffman made a contest out of it despite the fact that Scuzzyfuzzy endorsed the Dem as well as the fact that the GOP initially was against hoffman and then gave him little support after Scuzzyfuzzy dropped out. It says a lot whenever you finish a race like Hoffman did after initially having both major national party machines against you. Think of what would have been if he had National GOP support from the beginning. If conservatives have a defeatist attitude about this race, then the RINOs in the GOP win. We can't afford that.

Bill Owens Dem. 62,662 49.2%
Doug Hoffman Con. 57,572 45.2
Dede Scozzafava Rep. 7,041 5.5

92% reporting he’s down 5090

I agree w/you!! He should have waiting until every last vote was counted.

I don’t know why people think I’m saying she would be better.

We went all out on this. AND WE LOST.

I’m glad the Republican didn’t win. If we had never had a chance at winning, that would be one thing, but we were FAVORED To win and WE LOST.

This does not do our cause any good. It does not help Rubio. It does not help ANYONE that we want to help at all. It only hurts.

One of the problems with absentee ballots not yet counted is that many Republicans probably voted for Dede as she was the Rep. nominee at the time...But he gave a good fight and its the Republic Party that screwed the pooch on this one....There is always the next election and hopefully the idiots that run the party take notice.. Lets just smile and keep on keeping on. Its not over unless everyone quits...
