Oh, I hope so. BtD wants a .308 in his stocking. That one would do nicely.

Moles. I got moles. Yeh. Lotsa moles.

My personal preference would have been 6.5 mm Grendel

and replace both the .223 and the .306 with the Grendal.

Also see .276 Pedersen and supplies of .30-06

the whole point of the 6.8mm was that it would work in a 5.56mm lower. the switch would involve changing the barrel and bolt.

i’m still puzzled why they didn’t adopt it, particularly so because they’ve made the m4 carbine standard issue. they understand that they need to fight house to house, but they won’t use a larger bullet to do it. i suspect that the 3,000 fps mafia won’t let go.

As with aircraft, if it looks unwieldy and unworkable, it probably is.

Remember that in weaponry, simplicity has a value all its own. The AK-47 has only three parts that are to be cleaned in the field. The Browning M1911 pistol (.45 ACP) was issued for 74 years, and worked in four major wars, in radically different environments, with few mechanical failures or jams.

The M2 Browning .50 caliber MG was designed in 1918, and none of its countless potential replacements have come close to this “perfect” machine gun.

The M79 Grenade Launcher was so simple and effective that soldiers even made their own, modified ammo for it. R&D couldn’t resist combining it with an M16 rifle, into the M203, but the two combined were never as great as the two apart.

In Vietnam, US forces found US made weapons that had been lost in the Philippine Insurrection, yet were still in working order. Not wanting that to continue, the M16 was notoriously difficult to clean and easy to break.

Soldiers are a very fickle lot when it comes to their personal weapon. If they like a weapon, they admire it, if they don’t, it just saves time to go back to the drawing board.

I would have preferred the 6.5 Grendal to the 6.8

Both in in the same platform.

The ballistics of the 6.5 Grendal looked better
for both short and very long range.

It seemed the 6.5 Grendal had better
terminal velocity at 1000 meters than the .308

that seems to me to be the problem, and mr. kalishnikov did a better job of solving it than mr. stoner. most soldiers don’t need a 1,000 meter sniper rifle. they need a compact automatic rifle that works in close combat.

SCAR is adaptable to the various 6mm calibers - but the big thing there is that we want to stick to NATO ammo standards, and nobody else in NATO is interested in switching calibers again.

Sorry, but it looks like Dieudonne Saive (John Browning’s protege) got the last laugh on Mr. Kalashnikov and Mr. Stoner.

Every cartridge is a tradeoff.

7.62x39 was first a carbine round in the SKS.

The Germans most often used Machine Pistols
in 9mm parabellum for CQB.
starting with MP18.

,223 is a varmint round.
7.52x39 is a deer round.

I don't use a varmint rifle to shoot deer.

Somehow DOD thinks you can.
