Mpls. Co. Offers Solution for Liquid Tamiflu Shortage

A Minneapolis company's product could help resolve a shortage of liquid tamiflu, an antiviral medication used to treat flu symptoms that is easy for children to take.

The shortage came about because of an increased demand for Tamiflu following outbreaks of H1N1 .

To meet the demand, drugmaker Roche started concentrating on making capsule, instead of liquid, versions of the drug. That's because the company can make 25 courses of Tamiflu in capsule form in the same amount of time it takes to make one course of liquid Tamiflu.

Children, and adults who have trouble swallowing faced a shortage of the liquid version.

However, Minneapolis-based Paddock Laboratories offers a solution. It makes Ora-Sweet SF, a syrup that pharmacists can mix with Tamiflu capsules to create a liquid form of the drug.

In a typical year, Paddock sells 50,000 bottles of the berry-flavored syrup. This year the company has sold more than four times that.

Paddock Laboratories president Michael Graves said, "We are producing 24 hours a day, six days a week to make sure we can keep up with demand."

The company will likely make 300,000 bottles of Ora-Sweet SF by mid-November.

I read that the normal flu had mutated so as to be unaffected by Tamiflu. Can somebody verify this?

Just shove the pills down their throats with one of those things you use to give pills to animals!! After all, its H1N1 we’re talking about—the most deadly, virulent form of disease to ever hit mankind!! We should load it up in darts and shoot people from helicopter, if necessary.</sarc>

How about just having swine flu parties. A group of people identify someone with the flu, invite ‘em over. Serve mini-hot-dogs, cheese... and everybody drinks from the same glass after the infected has a couple of good swigs. Everybody gets sick for one day, and voila... all have been “inoculated”, no need for any tami or shot.

I’ve read that Star Anise is the main ingredient on Tamiflu and that if you steep it you can make a tea from it that has the same effects.

Of the 6 people I know locally who have had it so far this fall, 2 have become seriously ill requiring breathing treatments and other medicines in addition to Tamiflu. All 6 had Tamiflu within 48 hours of developing symptoms.

And: there are reports of people getting H1N1 more than once. When they do, the second time is often more serious than the first.

While it hasn't been serious for most people, that isn't the case for everyone, and there doesn't seem to be a foolproof way to know how badly it will effect any given person.

Of course they’ll still market as a treatment or preventative. This whole flu business is a racket.

Interesting that China stands to benefit from Tami sales, as Star Anise is a China export.
