On Mondays CBS Early Show, co-host Harry Smith promoted a new book and documentary about a New York City couple that spent a year without modern amenities, such as toilet paper and electricity, to limit their impact on the environment: This is an amazing saga....when the lights were switched back on, Colin and Michelle clearly saw a year that meant so much more than living without toilet paper.
Smith asked Colin and Michelle Beavan what their inspiration was, to which Colin replied: Concern for the planet. I mean, we were reading so much about global warming happening and we were just frustrated because what can any one person do? So we thought wed try to do what we could. Michelle added: I had just seen the movie An Inconvenient Truth, so that really it was kind of perfect timing.
In response to the Beavans only eating fresh unpackaged food, Smith saw the logic: the cost of what the wheat is in a box of cereal that costs $4? Its a couple of pennies, you know, versus all of this stuff thats around it. So theres theres some sense in all of this. Near the end of the segment, Colin again cited global warming hysteria: And we discovered that, you know, there is a climate emergency happening and it is possible for us as citizens to actually take care. Smith agreed: You just have to get 300 million people to do it.

Getting warmer...
“Yeeeech....smelly, dirty, poorly fed people......”
Let’s assume that they did not use toilet paper - so they fingered it out another way - then washed their hands in (cold?) water.
If they avoided packaged foods and ate raw foods, maybe even raw beef and raw eggs, they were not poorly fed. We should all avoid packaged foods, not for Gore-ish reasons, but for health reasons.
It does not say they did not heat their residence - it does not say they did not cook food.
If they used candles at night ipo electric lighting, they added to “global warming”, if Carbon Dioxide is indeed a contributor (I do not believe it is - Carbon dioxide is converted back to oxygen by vegetation, and oxygen does not contribute to global warming).
etc etc etc
You just can’t cure Stupid.
No there is not.
Guess what! You didn’t make any difference and the planet didn’t notice. What a completely pointless waste of time.
That’s great.
“Hey how you doing? No, I don’t care to shake hands”.
I feel a MUMM, MUMM, MUMM, moment coming on! Think I’ll join the Peace Corps.
My suggestion to all the media types who extol the screwball lifestyles of these “green” nuts as the way for all of us to go: you first.
(my apologies if this joke has already been made)
Nasty.....
I really don’t believe it. And as another poster pointed out they had a toddler daughter. With MRSA, germs & the flu etc they put her at risk IMO. I think they are wackadoddles. I am surprised they had any friends left. Hmm when they went over their friend’s houses did they use tp or just sling their arses in the sink & use cold water? I hope nobody buys their stupid book.
I doubt they did it either. But the bottom line is they stopped doing it so it is meaningless. If they aren’t going to live like that their entire lives then they haven’t accomplished a thing enviro-wise.
Very true. IMO writing the book was an waste of paper. Didn’t they think of that? Nope, just thought other kooks would buy their book while they counted their $.
“I don’t know where I’ll be then, Doc,” he said, “but I won’t smell too good, that’s for sure.”
What a wonderful, enlightened world we will have when people no longer have to suffer from the plague of electricity and toilet paper.
People who lived before these things became available were so much healthier, longer-lived and aware.
I know that’s exactly what I was thinking too. The thing that’s so dumb to me is, what toilet paper is made of is either paper from trees or cotton. They are both renewable resources. And there are more trees now then in the turn of the century.
Next up...they will have a bake sale to pay off the national debt.
These two did not need any toilet paper as they are obviously full of S%&T!
