Second tea-party caravan headed to Texas—with an Austin stop

By W. Gardner Selby | Tuesday, September 29, 2009, 12:00 PM

Leaders of a Republican-leaning political action committee have penciled in a second Tea Party Express tour across the United States, tentatively including six Texas stops including one Nov. 6 in Austin.

The caravan is expected to roll out from San Diego Oct. 25 and end up in Orlando, Florida Nov. 11. Unlike the first tour, which ended early this month, it won’t head north to Washington.

The working title: “Tea Party Express II: Countdown to Judgment Day.” Its intended message to Congress and the White House: “Enough!” Look for more details to pop here.

Some grass-roots Texas activists are skeptical of the caravan plans largely because they appear to be oriented toward Republican candidates and in their view, the tea-party movement needs to remain non-partisan.

In fact, I’m told there’s been back and forth with a Tea Party Express organizer including speculation that the caravan should be renamed so it’s not a “tea party” effort after all. If the “tea-party” label is peeled off, Texas activists have said they’d be comfortable publicizing and supporting the promised stops—including pauses in Amarillo, Lubbock, Abilene, Houston and Beaumont.

Sal Russo, chief strategist for the sponsoring Our Country Deserves Better PAC, discounted the possibility of removing the “tea-party” reference.

“There’s nobody that could say they started ahead of us,” Russo said, noting that the PAC blogged on the tea-party idea the same day in February that CNBC’s Rick Santelli uttered a cablecasted rant calling for another Boston tea party (peek here).

“You always have people, their egos get in the way of things,” Russo said. “They shouldn’t be in there bickering about little things… There are always detractors.”

At every stop, Russo added, the caravan participants are deferential to local groups and activists. “To be successful, it has to continue to be bottom up, where people at local levels take action,” he said.

Generally, Russo said, the plans for the second caravan bubbled up during the first caravan. “We wanted to point out to people there is a goal; it’s not just protest for protest’s sake,” he said, meaning that a year from this November there will be another round of congressional elections.

Russo stressed that the PAC is not registered in favor of Republicans, though it is a conservative group. “We’ll take conservatives wherever we can find them,” Russo said. “If you look at who’s holding up the health-care bill, it’s Republicans and Democrats.”

Probably a nice promo picture of Mitt Romney painted on the side of the bus.

Sal is, of course, right!
It has always been my understanding that the entire Tea Party idea took off with Rick Santelli's so-called rant.

To my surprise, on the last half of Monday's Glenn Beck program, some woman said the Tea Party's began with Ron Paul! Glenn did not correct her and no one else said a word.

Does anyone have any further knowledge of Paul's involvement?

While I agree we need to coalesce around a common goal, that nuts involvement would turn many off to the movement. It would certainly explain some of the experiences I had on the bus trip to DC for the 912 March!

“the caravan should be renamed so it’s not a “tea party” effort after all. If the “tea-party” label is peeled off, Texas activists have said they’d be comfortable publicizing and supporting the promised stops”

What’s their problem with the tea party moniker?

Yep, you’ll need to leave Friday.

We’re either going to Ballinger, Kerrville or Gatesville.

The writer takes a lot of “poetic license” in this story.

Read a little farther, this will flop just like everyone said the first one would flop.

Heck, the Fringe Stream Media still think only a few people showed up for the rally on 9-12 when there were over a million in front of the Capitol building.

You're absolutely correct, and you're point is???

If you can't take one day off and get your bag limit by Jan 3, you still have another option.
