Census worker found hanged with "fed" on chest

WASHINGTON (AP) - A U.S. Census worker found hanging from a tree near a Kentucky cemetery had the word "fed" scrawled on his chest, a law enforcement official said Wednesday, and the FBI is investigating whether he was a victim of anti-government sentiment.

The law enforcement official, who was not authorized to discuss the case and requested anonymity, did not say what type of instrument was used to write the word on the chest of Bill Sparkman, a 51-year-old part-time Census field worker and teacher. He was found Sept. 12 in a remote patch of the Daniel Boone National Forest in rural southeast Kentucky.

The Census has suspended door-to-door interviews in rural Clay County, where the body was found, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Investigators are still trying to determine whether the death was a slaying or a suicide, and if a slaying, whether the motive was related to his government job or to anti-government sentiment. An autopsy report is pending.

Investigators have said little about the case. FBI spokesman David Beyer said the bureau is assisting state police.

"Our job is to determine if there was foul play involved—and that's part of the investigation—and if there was foul play involved, whether that is related to his employment as a census worker," said Beyer.

Beyer declined to confirm or discuss any details about the crime scene.

Lucindia Scurry-Johnson, assistant director of the Census Bureau's southern office in Charlotte, N.C., said law enforcement officers have told the agency the matter is "an apparent homicide" but nothing else.

There has been anti-government sentiment in Kentucky since the whiskey makers moved there from Pennsylvania and Virginia during and after the Whiskey Rebellion. Still, (no pun intended)it wouldn’t surprise me if this was staged. A Potemkin lynching.

Obviusly he’s not black or the fact that he was a census worker or a ‘fed’ wouldn’t have even been mentioned.

My guess is he stumbled across something he shouldn’t have seen - pot field, still, meth lab, etc.

Well, hang me. It’s not like I didn’t do a search beforehand, Crawdad.

I didn't see the other thread either. Thanks for posting this one.

I think this was near Harlan, KY. If so, I’m not surprised. Harlan is a rough place.

Weird. This is the first I’ve heard of this story, hasn’t shown up in our local papers.

Yes that is truly sad. Probably just an ordinary Joe who was trying to make a living.

How long before government workers are added to hate crime legislation? I’ll give it a week.

Don’t get to excited. Wait for the facts. If you remember Rush got blamed for c*** that didn’t make sense.
Our side is to smart to START anything. Maybe the DUMS are getting impatient.

What was he doing in a REMOTE part of the Forest???? Sad....but til I know more info, I will hold my judgement about who did it.

US Census workers are instructed to drive EVERY single road within their assigned areas, and the ENTIRE nation is included, so this would include REMOTE parts of forests. They are looking for any living quarters or places where people are living, even if it's a homeless guy living out in the woods, so there is absolutely nothing unusual about a Census employee being out in the woods.

My DH has family from that area....woe to anyone that stumbles on a pot farm.

Rural Appalachia still has its share of moonshiners, plus plenty of pot growers and meth labs. And they don't take kindly to strangers poking around. This guy probably stumbled onto something he shouldn't have.

Up in the hollers, the "law of the land" still prevails.

The census is supposed to be taken every 10 years——not at random in between.

Perhaps some ‘moonshine maker’ thought it was a revenuer calling himself a census worker.

They better not show up at this residence.
Name and age only- then get off my property.
