War On Terror: Indonesian police killed the deadliest terrorist in East Asia Thursday, avenging the murders of 200 and striking a blow against al-Qaida. It took time, but Indonesia never gave up. This is how wars are won.
It was a long time coming. Malaysian-born Noordin became Indonesia's nightmare in 2002, after his role in the al-Qaida-affiliated Jemaah Islamiyah blasts on Bali, killing 202. In 2003, he bombed a Marriott hotel in Jakarta, killing 12. In 2004, he car-bombed the Australian embassy in the same city, adding nine to his toll. He then led another attack on Bali in 2005, killing 20 more. This summer, he hit the Marriott again along with the Ritz-Carlton in Jakarta, killing seven.
Noordin is also believed to have been involved in many bombings in the southern Philippines, leaving scores dead.
"Officer, recruiter, bomb maker and trainer" is how the FBI describes the Malaysian engineer and garage mechanic turned Muslim terrorist. Noordin ran a madrassa-like school in the 1990s for Jemaah Islamiyah in Malaysia.
But by 2004, Noordin thought JI was too "moderate" and split off from the group along with other like-minded terrorists such as al-Qaida's Riduan Isamuddin, a monster better know as "Hambali" and "the Osama bin Laden of Asia."
