I was overseas for a long time, and returned to find that ofTTTTTen was besetting me on all sides.
That pronunciation doesn’t even appear as an alternative in my 1950s Funk and Wagnell. It used to be the way you could tell people who had graduated from elementary school from those who hadn’t.

My mom is from Philadelphia; that’s why I gave it the “w”. Dad (Missourian) would say “aaaahf’n.” And “warsh.”
I’ve never been abroad more than a couple of weeks. Where did you live?
