Just checked the news index for articles in Japanese here in Tokyo on Barack Obama and his current difficulties.
Japan (their MSM and general populace) still is more or less in the mesmerized if not idolotrous mode over Obama akin to what was common six months ago there in the USA. (OK, give 'em time, folks!).
Link is here to the series of Japanese articles on Yahoo Japan datelined today, and linking to major Japanese newspapers online versions. Their challenge would appear to be to try to lead in and report to the Japanese People who may have the widespread impression Obama's support was still rather phenomenal back in the USA. It is an interesting challenge to see them try to address. It suggested in one Japanese article here today that Obama's public support is in a freefall and that when it comes to American politics, "a few steps ahead are clouded in mist" (politics and popularity in the US is rather unpredictable, so hence we have this situation). They picked up Sarah Palin and the "death panels" angle as well. There was also reporting of criticism of Obama heading off to vacation under this current situation (although they did not use the word "retreat" (撤退) just yet!).

" In a way, think about that little, naive, silly village in central Japan also with the name "Obama" that went crazy over him, just because of his last name."Maybe they will think it over and change the name to "Palin."

Being Japanese, and if they catch the slight aroma of weakness about him, and sense any strength in her, they will change it! ;-)

I guess they actually do care about the bonds they're holding.
Who'da thunk it?

I’d think “Obamakiri” would be a more resonant and descriptive homophone.

Oh, on the bond holding story, yesssss... I am sure Friday's late news of an additonal TWO TRILLION to the US FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
RED which that imcompetent lunatic's White House announced just about the time he scrammed for Martha's Vineyard,
freaked out the Japanese and will make for a more than interesting market opening our Monday morning, your (if you are stateside) Sunday night.

IMHO, the phenomenon here is perhaps most aptly described as オバマ離れ (or "Obamabanare") or "distancing/separating/jettisoning (from) Obama".

I was thinking Obamakiri would be apt, but I suppose it’s only apt to American ears. There’s an element of honor to it, to the Japanese.
What would describe allowing to die for convenience, abandoning elders?

I did a brief search without coming up with オバマケア yet on major Japanese liberal/left leaning news sites (Asahi, NHK, Mainichi...) In any case, I hope it comes but doubt there would be much market for it with public interest so high (even in urban areas) in their own historic election just a week from now.

He's on the run. The followers are confused now, some wondering whether it is time to jump ship. Congressional Dems now need to think about moving to the center, opposing some of his radical policies to position themselves for the 2010 elections. The messiah mask has fallen off. His mojo has been mislaid.
It's unclear how far down his numbers will fall. But he appears already to have achieved Jimmy Carterization. Just a matter of time now...
