Special interests battle for climate-change ground
The Hill ^ | August 20, 2009 | Jim Snyder

The climate battle will be waged in the ornate setting of the U.S. Senate this fall, but for now the fight is taking place in humbler locales like local libraries, college campuses and county fairs as supporters and critics struggle for hearts and minds beyond the beltway.

On the heels of campaigns against the climate-change bill launched by oil companies and other opposing interests, unions and environmental groups kicked off a 22-state swing with a rally in Cleveland, Ohio, on Thursday to sell the bill’s environmental and economic benefits.

More may be riding on their ability to rally a grassroots base, with four Democratic senators reportedly pushing for a more modest energy bill that doesn’t include a carbon cap but would mandate more renewable energy production. Because few Senate Republicans are likely to support a cap-and-trade bill, keeping Democrats unified is thought to be crucial to passing climate legislation.

The calendar is another potential obstacle. A climate bill will compete with a dozen spending bills and a controversial healthcare reform package for floor time before the legislative year ends.

The pro-climate bill campaign started Thursday continues the theme Democratic pollsters have said is the best way to sell the legislation – not just as a climate protection bill but as a mechanism for creating millions of new green jobs.

The tour’s official moniker is the “Made in America Jobs Tour” and is being supported in part by the Blue Green Alliance, a coalition of labor and environmental groups that joined forces to push a climate bill and build support for the pro-organizing legislation, the Employee Free Choice Act.

Clean energy is the “cornerstone of the new industrial economy,” said Leo Gerard, president of the United Steelworkers union, in a news conference with reporters.

“A clean energy economy is a surefire way to put our country back to work,” said Maggie Fox, president and CEO of the Alliance for Climate Protection, which is also sponsoring the pro-climate tour.

Rallies are planned in Ohio, Missouri, Michigan, Iowa and 18 other states and will continue through September when the Senate begins again to debate the climate bill.

House-passed legislation seeks to reduce carbon emissions by 17 percent by 2020 and by 83 percent by 2050, but the measure faces opposition from a number of business groups who fear higher energy prices will cost millions of jobs.

Some Senate Democrats have also expressed concern about job losses, despite some governmental studies that found the overall economic impact of the climate bill will be relatively modest, at least in the short term.

Ten senators said any climate bill should include additional measures to protect the manufacturing base from having to move jobs overseas due to higher domestic energy costs.

Four other Democrats – Sens. Byron Dorgan and Kent Conrad of North Dakota, Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas and Ben Nelson of Nebraska – have said the climate bill should be set aside in favor of a narrower energy bill that includes a national renewable energy standard, according to Bloomberg news.

Stoking popular opposition to a carbon cap are various fossil fuel, farm and industrial groups that have mounted their own grassroots campaigns.

Energy Citizens, an alliance of the American Petroleum Institute, American Farm Bureau Federation, the National Association of Manufacturers and others, are sponsoring rallies to activate farmers and employees in the sector against climate legislation. They plan rallies in 20 states.

If this bill is passed I wonder what union big shots are going tell many of their members when they lose their jobs.

Have I got some jaw dropping news for you anti global warming folks. My son is a freshman in our local public high school. Today his biology teacher said that global warming is only an hypothesis, it has not been tested enough to be theory yet, and most politicians have jumped to the third step of scientific method and called it a theory. PUBLIC SCHOOL BIOLOGY TEACHER, PEOPLE!! Not on the global warming bandwagon. This guy even reads the Drudge Report. HOLY ARTIC ICE CAPS, BATMAN, THIS GUY SOUNDS CONSERVATIVE! In a public school.....whodathunkit?

You said — HOLY ARTIC ICE CAPS, BATMAN, THIS GUY SOUNDS CONSERVATIVE! In a public school.....whodathunkit?

Ummmm..., I had a Christian Physics teacher in high school... does that count? :-)

I also posted, before, about a Biology teacher that I had in high school, too — that said (in regards to the “false theory of Evolution”)...

Heck! I’ve been right “in there” on this subject from the time I was in high school and when my high school biology teacher told us (when pointing to the classroom door) that “God stays on the other side of that door!”....

Well, although I didn’t say it to him, I said to myself, “I’m bringing Him right in here with me!” ... LOL...

So, just like this false theory of Global Warming... it’s also the same way with the *false theory of Evolution* that they are teaching in high school...

It’s one thing to gripe and complain about these things and disagree with it, but it’s quite *another* to convince your friends and neighbors and relatives and coworkers...

THEREFORE..., it’s also absolutely necessary for people to know the information in the following documentary. If there were simply *one* video that you could see and/or show people you know... this would be the *one*...

The following is an *excellent* video documentary on the so-called “Global Warming” I would recommend it to all FReepers. It’s a very well-made documentary.

“The Great Global Warming Swindle”

If you want to download it, via a BitTorrent site (using a BitTorrent client), you can get it at the following link.
http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/3635222/The_Great_Global_Warming_Swindle
[this is a high-quality copy, of about a gigabyte in size...]

It’s worth seeing and having for relatives, friends, neighbors and coworkers to see.

Also, see it online here...

[this one is considerably lower quality, is a flash video and viewable online, of course...]

Buy it here...

[this one would be the very highest quality version, on a DVD disk, of several gigabytes in size...]

Also, in split parts on YouTube...

how long ago was that? when i was in school the teacher taught what was in the text books and ignored the whole God vs. evolution thing. it wasn’t in the books. one did mention that there was a big bang theory and that a lot of people believe that God created the universe, but never insisted it was one or the other. what amazed me the most about my son’s teacher is that it was now. when a lot of teachers (even the ones not involved in science classes) are yelping on endlessly about global warming and how dangerous it is. 2yrs ago a geography teacher had these kids terrified that if they did not recycle and get the right light bulbs and push thier parents to conserve energy and water the whole planet would die.....like NOW. thank God that idiot retired. Maybe our school is just strange. I know a lot of freepers think public school sucks, but ours is pretty good. we have an NJROTC program, ag classes, academic honors courses, and a freakin biology teacher that does not believe one way or another about global warming.

You asked — how long ago was that?

Oh..., I hate to tell you... :-) It was back in the 60s... woo-hoo!

This was an advanced Biology class and also an advanced Physics class. I don’t know what they did in the regular classes. And the Biology instructor was really adamant about that, making it the *first thing* that was said in that class on the first day of class, too...

The Physics teacher, on the other hand, was a great teacher, everyone liked him and was quite entertaining too, but he knew his stuff (and this was also, as I said, an advanced class, too). On the last day of class, at the end of the school year, he then made a short speech about God and creation and how we should keep our minds open to how these things came about.

yeah.. mine was the 80’s. my favorite science teacher applied to be the teacher to go up with the shuttle. she didn’t get the slot. that was my senior year....1985. and as we all know the lady that did win, lost very badly. my teacher was so cool and she did NOT allow any political garbage to affect her classes. that does not seem to be the norm now..sigh.

the boy just informed me that this biology teacher told them that the govt is going the wrong way and he quit his job and started teaching so he could influence kids to go in the right direction, which is back to a constitutional republic. WOW, just wow!

Why the Waxman-Markey bill will kill the US with energy outsourcing and refining issues...PDF

http://www.api.org/Newsroom/upload/ENSYS_W_M_Briefing_Report_2009_8_20.pdf

“”Refining, energy security, jobs, physical security, economy, a decent life....

The United States will be more dependent on imports of gasoline and other petroleum fuels while U.S. refining production would be shifted overseas if a climate change bill passed in the U.S. House of Representatives becomes law, a study shows.

An analysis by global consulting firm EnSys Energy of the impact of the “American Clean Energy and Security Act”, which passed by a narrow 219-212 vote in the House in June, on the U.S. refining sector showed that investment in U.S. refining capacity could plummet because the cost of doing business could soar. Production at U.S. refineries would drop while production at refineries in countries that do not limit their own greenhouse gas emissions would rise. The impact on global refinery greenhouse gas emissions would be minor as reductions in U.S. emissions mostly would be offset by increases in emissions in other countries.

“This study clearly shows the devastating impact this legislation could have on U.S. jobs and U.S. energy security,” said API President and CEO Jack Gerard. “Climate legislation should not come at the expense of U.S. economic and energy security. Congress needs to analyze carefully the impact of any climate policy on ordinary Americans, American jobs and American companies. A deep decline in U.S. refining activity would have a ripple effect throughout the economy, affecting jobs in sectors beyond the oil and gas industry. Steelworkers, construction workers, even the shop keepers, school teachers and waitresses working in communities where refineries operate would feel the pinch.”

The House climate legislation drives up individual and business fuel costs because it inequitably distributes free emission “allowances” to various sectors. Refiners are held responsible for 44% of emissions, including the refinery emissions (about 4%) as well as consumer emissions from planes, trains, automobiles, heating oil, and other petroleum use. Yet refiners are allocated only 2.25% of allowances. In contrast, some other sectors receive free allowances that match or exceed their obligation.

According to the EnSys study, commissioned by API, the U.S. would need to increase its imports of petroleum fuels in order to meet as much as nearly one-fifth of U.S. refined product demand in 2030 if the House climate bill becomes law, double what imports would have been.

U.S. refining throughput, a measure of productivity, could plummet by as much as 25% (4.4 million barrels per day) and investment in U.S. refining could “
