Senate confirms Sotomayor, first Hispanic justice
The Hill ^ | 08/06/2009 | J. Taylor Rushing

The Senate on Thursday sent Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court with a modest display of bipartisan support, making her the first Hispanic justice and only the third woman to serve on the high court.

The 68-31 vote held few surprises, as a small band of Republicans joined Democrats in confirming her 72 days after President Barack Obama nominated the former prosecutor and judge. Her confirmation paves the way for Sotomayor to begin assembling her staff and prepare for the court to convene in October.

I love america, where a mediocre intellect can become a Supreme Court justice because she’s a radical racist of the proper color.

Our country is rapidly being torn apart as a direct result of "affirmative action". Racial quotas don't work - they only instill a sense of entitlement in place of a work ethic.

To the La Raza types, Benjamin Cardozo, a white of Iberian Jewish ancestry, does not count as a Latino. Spaniards, Portuguese, and Latin Americans of European descent need not apply. (Of course, only whites discriminate, so La Raza’s exclusion of people like Cardozo, Admiral Farragut, or Cameron Diaz from the category of Hispanic is not discrimination.)

What’s sad is that me, with NO legal training, would probably make a better Justice than she would.

Well certainly with this show of bipartisanship, it means if there is ever a Republican president again, some Dems will be magnanimous and give his or her judicial nominees a fair hearing. HA HA.

Did any Repub senator call out Sen Menendez for his divisive comments, accusing those voting nay of doing it out of bigotry?

I think they should hang their heads in shame. They could have done this 9 years ago with Miguel Estrada!

Was glad to see that Saxby Chambliss and Lisa Murkowski both voted NO. Even though it did not make a difference, good to see a few Republicans with enough guts to vote no against this bigot

Not one of them raised her membership in La Raza, an organization worse than the KKK!

Their motto is for the race everything, for everyone else nothing!!!

Second Hispanic Justice. Justice Cardozo was nominated by Herbert Hoover in 1932.

Maybe splittimg hairs. He was of Portugese and Jewish ancestry.

I still think it was a slap at BO. This is a smaller number than what Roberts was confirmed by I believe.
