Barf! I'd say to put the flowers through the garbage disposal but it wasn't the flowers’ fault.
The one positive come out of this. A positive for thieves that is. Thieves won't have to worry that anyone in that neighborhood will call the cops if Gates’ apartment is ever broken into again.

If Gates was thankful for the caller’s actions, shouldn’t it follow that he should be thankful for the policeman’s actions? Just sayin’....

This reminds me of the behavior of the chronically abusive.
First, they find any slight to be worthy of a tirade. Then, when that tirade is exposed, the abuser timidly tries to make amends and promises that it won’t happen again.
Which is doesn’t until the next slight is felt, then the cycle repeats itself.
Just a reminder. Who knows what went on in the mind of this affluent academic?

I’d like to see a contest: “Break into Prof Gates House!”
It could be a videogame, or it could be real, but either way there should be a gangsta rap tune which would become an overnight platinum seller. The music video would show footage from Rodney King, the Selma riots, the MLKing assasination, Roots, and the Rosa Parks memorial bus. At the end, the rap group could just be shown sitting around a table drinking beers, as long as they drove up in Bentleys and Maybacks.
Of course, that whole idea is just my incredibly sick mind wandering where it probably shouldn’t. Watch for it.

Of course he sent her flowers.Because if not for her,he wouldn't now have the opportunity to sign a $5 million book deal with Simon & Soros, thus ensuring that, when combined with his Harvard salary/pension,he'll be able to summer on Martha's Vineyard for the rest of his life.

Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. has sent flowers to the woman who unwittingly sparked a national debate on race by calling police to report what she thought might be a break-in at Gates home. Did Gate personally pay for the flowers or did he squeeze this out his non-profit organization like his trip to China?

This guys lawyer must have gotten him a P.R. man to guide him through damage control.Yup. And it's a sure sign that he knows how stupid and arrogant he came across. Of course, that is part of his job description, so don't expect any real behavioral changes.

That's OK,why no outcry about serving an Irish cop beer. Maybe he would have prefered a martini.
No stereotyping there, no siree.

SHE sparked a national debate because she called the police??? Let’s just point fingers at EVERYONE other than the loud mouthed egotist who is really responsible. They should put “Gates sparked a national debate on race after a woman called the police to report a possible break in at Gates’ house.”
