Ahern signs new gun control act into law (Ireland bans handguns to halt "gun culture" emergence!)

Justice Minister Dermot Ahern has signed new gun control legislation into law.

The act bans handguns in Ireland and also introduces a requirement for referees, background medical checks and standards for the safe keeping of guns in the home for all firearms licence applicants.

It also makes it an offence to brandish a realistic imitation firearm in public.

Mr Ahern says the legislation is designed to halt the emergence of a gun culture in Ireland.

The pic had no caption or source, but I guess that must be the fool. It came with the story.

OK,great. No guns in Ireland. Good plan. Let’s keep it on the short list of isolated islands that we may impose our collective clinger will on at some point in the near future. (/sarcasm)

Mr Ahern says the legislation is designed to halt the emergence of a gun culture in Ireland.

The man makes me embarrassed to admit my Irish ancestry. I have plenty of that in addition to the Welsh and Scots. Too bad. We have lots of guns and lots of potatoes in Idaho. No need to waste money visiting Ireland.

Am I correct in assuming that Ahern is a socialist or other kind of lefty?

The Irish have been oppressed for so long, they don’t realize it any more. When I was visiting there two years ago, they were talking about how low the crime rate is and how wonderful the medical and dental care is. One of the women in our travel group was a local US TV anchor and virtually every day, two or three people would stop her and tell her how wonderful her teeth looked and ask if it cost her much money to get them that nice?

She had braces as a teenager and used whitening toothpaste. That’s it.

Every TV set and computer in Ireland has an annual tax levied on it of about $150-200. Autos cost over $1000 to license every year. On top of that there’s a Value-added tax of about 15% and about 30-40% income tax. The average 2 bedroom house, tiny by US standards, costs nearly $400,000.

Hey,if it works for the Irish it's fine with me.They're a sovereign country that's entitled to have their own Constitution...their own laws...their own policies.

*Our* Constitution gives individual citizens the right to bear arms for the purposes of self defense. That's the policy in *this* sovereign country

There’s been a de-dacto ban on hand guns in the Republic since the Irish got independence anyway.

It would be the same with me except that I decided a long time ago that there must be a considerable difference between the Irish still found in Ireland and those of us whose families emigrated generations ago.

The Irish should be ashamed of themselves. It will be no time at all before they are convinced that they must outlaw knives, pointy sticks, and harsh words.

I thought guns were already banned there. I know the Brits banned them for the Catholics back with the Penal laws.

Ireland has been gun-free for generations. That’s how come the nearby British gov’t still controls the whole thing. /sarc
