Commentary: Why be afraid of government? (Don't fear the Reaper. . . )

PRINCETON, New Jersey (CNN) -- Health care reform has gotten off track. The president's news conference fell flat. Polls show growing unease with the proposals currently in play. And Congress will not meet the deadline that President Obama imposed.

The status quo, as the president correctly explained to reporters, is not sustainable. Our health care system is not working. Millions of people lack insurance, costs are out of control, businesses and workers are struggling to keep up with premiums, and there are tremendous inefficiencies plaguing many parts of the system.

Conditions will only become worse in coming years. Our health care system brings to mind the economist Herbert Stein's famous maxim: "When something can't go on forever, it will stop."

When Congress returns in September, Obama will only be able to revitalize the prospects for health care reform if he offers Americans a stronger argument about what government can do to improve this situation.

After years of being in the opposition, Democrats are still scared about defending the value of government. Their political nerves have been exacerbated by polls showing the public is growing increasingly concerned about the size of government spending. This reticence about government, in the aftermath of the Democrats' dramatic 2008 election victory, has been one of the most striking aspects of the administration's rhetoric in the past few months.

Government deciding who lives and who dies might be a good reason to fear your government.

The current systems IS unsustainable...

The costs ARE out of control...

But the REASON IS GOVERNMENT!!

How can the SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM be the solution?

When they are not even able to recognize the problem?

Commentary: Why be afraid of government?

The Constitution was signed to put limits on government. The founding fathers did this for a reason.

Medicare works? That may come as news to a lot of people who are dependent on it.

Given the list of successes of big Government, a better question might be, why not be afraid of Government?

I get it. As long as we ignore what is IN the bill all will be well until Obama’s Mengele squad denies us treatment.

This government, especially Obama government, I would never trust on anything. They do not wish the American people well.

Be very worried.

Liberals’ idea of health care: break both your legs and offer you crutches paid for by everyone else.

Government is purchasing 50% of all health care in the USA right now. Now blames the free market and greedy private insurance for the rising cost.

Who doesn’t pay attention to what is on the bill from the health care provider? Who won’t listen when people try to point out double billing and fraud?

Why be afraid of corporations, businessmen and financial speculators? They’re all just human beings, and the role they play has nothing to do with whether or not they will be good or evil. The only way to minimize risk is to ensure that no one person and no one organization (the US Federal government, any US State government, IBM, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs or George Soros) has more than a limited and defined set of powers.

Abort the young, euthanize the old, give the savings to your Democrat supporters. Oh yeah, keep a little for yourself and your cronies.

Simplified government takeover of healthcare.

Zelizer, and his mother, Viviana, the Lloyd Cotsen '50 Professor of Sociology, believe they are the University's first mother-son teaching pair.

"I'm a true historian, but I never like to be confined by boundaries," he said. "I've learned from social science, political science, social history. To do it right, it has to be done without any rigid disciplinary boundaries."

Our health care system is not working.

I disagree with that premise.

Our health care system is not working. Millions of people lack insurance, costs are out of control, businesses and workers are struggling to keep up with premiums, and there are tremendous inefficiencies plaguing many parts of the system.

Millions of people lack insurance - Require them to have insurance if they want healthcare, or provide evidence that they can self-insure.

costs are out of control - Because they cover the care of people who choose not to pay and they cover the costs of government mandates that people don't necessarily want(mental care, abortion, pregnancy, substance abuse, etc.)

businesses and workers are struggling to keep up with premiums - government and uninsured driving costs up.

there are tremendous inefficiencies plaguing many parts of the system - Basically, the government!

Government is the most dangerous, destructive and murderous invention mankind has ever produced. It is far more dangerous than the guns that the Left so bleats on about. Now, government is in the hands of lunatics able to believe in wild, impossible fantasies of economics and science. It is a volatile mixture worse than a drunk shooting in the dark at will o’ the wisps.
