NEW YORK A New York Police Department rookie just couldn't wait to get started.
One of the NYPD's newest officers made his first arrest Thursday just minutes after graduating from the Police Academy in a ceremony at Madison Square Garden.
Officer Dariel Firpo, 23, was leaving the midtown Manhattan ceremony when he saw a 79-year-old man being robbed of his wallet and thrown to the ground by a mugger, police said.
The mugger tried to run away, but Firpo caught him without incident, they said.

Thanks for the update, but I still congratulate this young officer making the city safer at least that was his intention...can’t fault him for what the governor does. He gave it his best.
congrats to the officer on the speedy first collar..... must really want to advance fast...
Officer Firpo has got himself a good start as an NYPD Cop, Kudos to him. Only now wait until the cranky liberal NYC crowd gets hold of him for actually enforcing the law ... he'll become much less enthusiatic and much more cynical when confronting a perp
Transfer him to DC and post him at the bottom of the Capitol steps for even more arrests in record time.
Better send reinforcements and a few buses for that.
Good deal. Kudos to Officer Firpo
I’ll tell you what:
I sure wish I had a badge and arrest powers last night. There was guy who really needed a reality check, and the “NM State Police Officer” who happened by at the time didn’t want to bother with even giving the guy a warning..... But he did have time to ‘blip his siren’ and say something negative to a guy who prevented a possible disaster.

He gave it his best.Perp was just released a week ago and had 48 prior arrests. But Mayor Bloomin' Idiot doesn't think the proletariat should be allowed to be armed.1 posted on July 3, 2009 4:25:00 AM EDT by AlaskaErik
You (understandably) took the wrong message from AlaskaErik's #1.The story relates that the suspect had 48 prior arrests and was only out of Sing Sing a week before Officer Firpo nabbed him for arrest #49. Story doesn't say that the suspect has been released.

Some cops hate the paperwork so they don’t want to be bothered with it.
Officer Firpo, this buds for you.
He was trying to get money to pay for his health care that
previously had been free!
Thanks for the update. Don’t you just love investigative reporting now a days...lol.
I would think a more proper line of reasoning would point towards his mindset regarding his profession .... protect and defend the innocent ... as opposed to self-interest.
Makes me proud of my old Department! Way to go Rook!
thanks Capt buzzkill.
