Q. ER patient load is increasing because patients don’t have access to insurance or primary care. How are you going to put primary care physicians and nurse practioners back into the community so the ER is not American’s primary source of care?
A. We need more primary care physicians. We can’t do it overnight. We can change incentives around what it takes to become a physician. Specialisties are more lucrative than primary care physicians. Med school loans for students to go into specialities in order to repay their loans more quickly. May implement some loan forgiveness for students who go into primary care for a certain number of years.
Then why are you trying to pass this overnight?
I wouldn’t care what Obama says. I don’t trust someone who won’t allow his ideas to be cross examined by legitimate opposition.
Q. 46 million people are uninsured now. We can’t get an appointment now. How are we going to get appointments when those additional 46 million people are insured?
A. We need to provide incentives for doctors to go into primary care, reduce administrative paperwork, get nurses involved in more effective ways, increase prevention and wellness to reduce ER care to free up primary care physicians to see more patients.
