UPDATE: The governor’s office issued a statement Monday afternoon: "Gov. Sanford is taking some time away from the office this week to recharge after the stimulus battle and the legislative session, and to work on a couple of projects that have fallen by the wayside. We are not going to discuss the specifics of his travel arrangements or his security arrangements."

The whereabouts of Gov. Mark Sanford have been unknown to state officials since Thursday, and some state leaders are questioning who is in charge of the executive office.

Neither the governor’s office nor the State Law Enforcement Division has been able to reach Sanford, who left the mansion in a black SLED Suburban SUV, said Sen. Jake Knotts and three others familiar with the situation who declined to be identified.

Sanford’s last known whereabouts were near Atlanta, where a mobile telephone tower picked up a signal from his phone, authorities said.

One official familiar with the situation said there is no indication that foul play is involved.

. . . . .

First lady Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press her husband has been gone for several days and she doesn't know where. She said she was not concerned. Jenny Sanford said the governor said he needed time away from their children to write something.

Could it be he is heading over to visit the troops and his itinerary is a secret?

Well, there go any Presidential aspirations.

His wife doesn’t know where he is on Father’s Day, and she’s not concerned?

Gimme a break.

If I’m not mistaken, didn’t he criticize 0bama? A little Chi- Town payback? Maybe he’s meeting with Jimmy Hoffa?

I smell a cooked up HIT PIECE with a nice misquote of his wife to add a special flavor.
The Columbia rag is a dedicated left wing Dem propaganda sheet stocked full of recent lobotomized journalism student leftists from USC Columbia.

Jenny Sanford said the governor said he needed time away from their children to write something.

Why didn't he use his office or a library? He's with his girlfriend, unless Lindsey Graham is missing, too.

Do not know about SC but here in Nevada the LT Gov automatically takes over if the Gov is out of the State.

But one publication (The State), most likely a liberal rag, as they ALL are, says he’s missing (ie irresponsible), and we believe them??

South Carolina was first to secede last time, on December 20th, 1860.

When Bill was missing, Hillary said he was ministering to young girls.

Surprised you were the only one to bring that up.

FWIW, not many, but AP and a couple of local outlets have picked up on this as well.

If at first you don't secede, try, try again? :)

He has been the most outspoken critic of Obama. He has been frequently mentioned as a possible candidate for President in 2012.

Now he is missing. This is scary. This is not some anonymous Gov. from a minor state. This is one of the top five plausible replacements for Obama in the next election.

Let us hope that it turns out to be something like him visiting the troops.

Worst case is that it’s an Arkencide. Or a kidnapping/ drugging / setup designed to neutralize him in place with a ‘honey trap’.

Yeah, how'd that work out for them?
