He is credited with saving the Republican Party during the Nixon Resignation and refused a promised VP Nomination in return for the Ambassadorship to China. As G*d is my witness I would have bet good money he came from the Senate. I guess because he acted and governed so much like one.
I respect the man but found his governance to be squishy and compromising to the extreme.
