A group of 4296 women were asked to recall their physical activity levels during four key stages of life: 10 to 15 years old, 15 to 30 years old, 30 to 50 years old, and 50 years old and older.
The odds of developing breast cancer did not appear to change in relation to exercise levels between ages 10 and 30, but women above age 30 significantly cut their chances of developing breast cancer if they were more active, the researchers found.
The study was led by Lisa Sprod of University of Northern Colorado in Greeley and presented at the American College of Sports Medicine's annual meeting in Seattle.
"An average amount of exercise was defined as 60 minutes per week," Miss Sprod said. "so anyone exercising less than 60 minutes was below average, above 60 minutes was above average, and anyone that considered themselves 'highly competitive' chose that category."
Fewer women who classified themselves as "highly competitive" between the ages of 30 and 50 developed breast cancer, compared to women who were less physically active.
Likewise, fewer women who classified themselves as highly competitive at age 50 or older developed breast cancer when compared to women who exercised less than 60 minutes per week.
"Preliminarily," Sprod said, "the take home message is that accumulating greater physical activity after the age of 30 may play a role in reducing the risk of developing breast cancer."

Thanks for posting.
Pregnancy, abortion, genetics, and birth control have a bigger impact
More fat=more estrogen=more breast cancer.
I think having a buttload of extra fat on your carcass has an impact as well.
Enough already. Breast cancer happens. It even happens to men. I know...
They probably exercise more than an hour a week because they are healthier.
Or, they are healthier because they exercise more than an hour a week.
Either way, if they are healthier, of course breast cancer will be less of a problem.
Man to not exercise more than 1 hour a week you really have to be lazy.
One day exercise is good for you. The next day it isn’t. I wish they would make their minds up.
And have tighter buns.
My sister had breast cancer and of all of us (4 daughters in our family) she was the one who was the most health concious. Everyday at the gym, eating organic foods, special trainer, very strict diet and trim.
She met none of the risk factors. We had no family history. She had had 6 kids. Never been on birth control or hormones. Does she regret having a healthy lifestyle? No. But it sure didn’t help her in the cancer prevention realm. It just proved to me that control is an illusion.
Some people who never smoked a cigarette in their lives develop lung cancer. However, these are the more exceptional cases, not the norm. Nature can be cruel.
However, a woman who has lots of kids, exercises, eats a good diet and deals with stress properly has a much less chance fo developing breast cancer than a fat career woman with no kids who doesn’t exercise.
did she breast feed?
“More fat=more estrogen=more breast cancer.”
Most people don’t know that fat produces estrogen. To add to the problems overweight women also usually have too much belly fat which causes an overload of testosterone. That ups the cancer risk even more.
belly fat causes testosterone?
Can you elaborate on that, or provide a link? I’ve never heard of this. I knew about fat that produces estrogen. I read once that extremely large women that lose their ovaries from cancer or other problems can get by without hormone treatments because their body fat makes up for the loss of estrogen.

Ok. And visceral fat is the same thing as brown fat?
Not that I can tell. Isn’t brown fat the type that babies have?
Brown fat is the fat that is attached to some of your internal organs and it excels at generating body heat...iirc.
