Tucson cancels Fourth of July celebration to save money (Now this will Tork you off!)

There'll be no fireworks over A-Mountain this Fourth of July.

The city has decided to scrap the holiday celebration , which included the mountaintop fireworks and related events at the Tucson Convention Center Downtown.

Canceling the event will save the city at least $51,000, Asst. City Manager Richard Miranda said in a news release Wednesday.

Rodney Campbell, spokesman for Marana, expects the town will benefit.

"I'm sure we'll get more people" he said, noting that the town suspected Tucson would cancel and has taken that into account for planning.

Campbell said it will be great for the Marana businesses in the Arizona Pavilions area, where they're having their Fourth of July party for the first time this year.

After the next wave of foreclosures hits, we’ll be lucky if there are enough residents left in the Southwest US to make it worth keeping the Mexicans from taking it all back...

So, did Phoenix have any enthusiastic Cinco de Mayo celebrations that the city paid for this past month?

How about one of the car dealerships chipping in, because they are usually patriotic. Oh, right...

Ahh, yes. Tucson - the San Francisco of Arizona.

Liberal town, liberal policies. Lots of Obama stickers. Giffords (D) in the House.

The synopsis was a bit difficult to follow - How does that book relate to the issues of today?

In some ways it talks of the evolution and rise of PCism but it's a little too Liberal and apologetic for my taste.

Marana is the city just to the North of Tucson. Sleepy little burg, but got smart and ‘annexed’ massive amounts of the desert before Tucson could get their act together.

Now businesses sit ‘just over the line’ pay much less in taxes but they call for police or fire Tucson units show up.

So funny, you could almost laff. I left Tucson a lifetime ago, nice to vist now, but as noted elesewhere, way too Californicated these days.
