PRAGUE -- The head of U.S. Central Command, General David Petraeus, has told RFE/RL he thinks that "on balance" the expected closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility and abandonment of so-called enhanced interrogation techniques will "help" U.S. efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the struggle against transnational extremist violence.

That should have been "pseudo-speak".

First of all, the Geneva Convention addressed the treatment of incarcerated military personnel. It did not address the treatment of terrorists, people who don't conduct themselves in accordance with Geneva Convention guidelines.

Non-uniformed enemy combatants are classed as spies and saboteurs by the Geneva Convention of 1924, and as such are subject to summary execution.

No reason we can't follow the rules here.

Chip 'em and follow 'em home to their dens. Then bomb them. The jihad will eliminate the ones we do not. Problem solved.

As the good General said, it will "help".

Well of course closing Gitmo is the right thing to do. That was never the question.

The question is what to do with all these terrorist scumbags we currently have there. If someone came up with a GOOD answer to that I’d be all in favor of closing Gitmo. Without an answer, it has to stay open.

No other countries will take them. Putting them into our legal system via supermax prisons has so many problems I can’t even list them all. Where should they go?

Oh know...another FREEPER President hopeful down the drain...lol. That is why I don’t get on the FREEPER bandwagon when discussing future Presidents. Too many have turned out awful. I always wait until the primaries which I wish most FREEPERS would too.

GITMO has always been too much of a pleasure palace for these inhuman cretins.

There must be a more appropriate spot for them in this planet somewhere...while they breathe.

I agree. Let’s close it. And shoot all future battlefield combatants on sight.

Many will interpret this politically, when Petraeus speaks in terms of the military, tactics, and strategy.

That's not really true. Petraeus has always stressed that there is not a military solution to either Iraq or Afghanistan without a political solution. This is all about "winning hearts and minds." It's entirely political.

Remember Petraeus jumped on the bandwagon who claimed that disbanding the Iraqi army and the Ba'ath socialist party were mistakes. He took a popular political position in order to get the job he has. He was wrong about that too.

The reason Guantanamo doesn’t work is because we don’t string ‘em up by their burn’t dudads and drown ‘em in pig fat.

Instead we give custom ordered meals, prayer rugs and soccer fields to play on.

Make them swim to the Traz. If they don’t make it - tough.

The military has known for generations of the issues related to occupying enemy territory. All of the “hearts and minds” stuff is in regard to that. Therefore, it’s the necessary civil part of a military operation, and it’s even a part of the military pre-planning.

Patraeus is wrong. The prisons that these detainees will be sent to will actually provide them with worse living conditions than Gitmo.

Secretary Gates was absolutely right when he said that Gitmo was one of the finest prisons in the world.

This isn't even about what would actually be best for the detainees, it's all about the misplaced self-righteousness of the liberals.
