SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Brazil's federal police have arrested a high-ranking al Qaeda operative in Sao Paulo and are keeping him under tight security, a local newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The suspect is allegedly a chief of international communications for al Qaeda, according to the report in Folha de S.Paulo, Brazil's largest daily newspaper.

The report did not give the suspect's name or say when he was taken into custody, nor did it provide a source for the information.

The arrest was surrounded by secrecy with the federal police disguising it as part of an investigation into neo-Nazi groups in the country, Folha said. The report also said U.S. authorities were notified of the arrest.

There is a large Arab population in Brazil. Many jihadist sites in Brazil. Logical place for AQ to work the net.

They’re getting farther and farther away from Israel...making their boasts of aiding Palestinians difficult for even stupid Palis to believe.

Also, nice catch by Brazil!

But the jihadis are fairly easy to spot there.
For example, see if you can find one in this beach shot from Ipanema...

Remember, they will like us if we don’t water board this guy and after a heart felt conversation with some liberal and openly gay interrogators he will spill the beans. Or did Brazil pick him up for his own good? (like right before the CIA)((that was delayed by an unnamed administration.))?

The tri-state area ocomprised of Brazil-Uruguay-Argentina is a hotbed of Islamic activity.

We will see attacks originating from the south.

West Africa and Brazil are key loci of the Lebanese diaspora. Until the 1980s, this diaspora was largely Maronite, but it increasingly includes Shi’ia Muslims.
