Conservatives can sputter endlessly that Sonia Sotomayor is a lefty judicial activist. Privately, they glumly recognize the political reality - she's a slam dunk for confirmation.
Republican leaders also understand - most of them, at least - that Sotomayor's nomination is also a savvy political move by President Obama that puts the GOP in an electoral bind.
At heart, this appointment reminds that as a President who has already made history, Obama is intent on making more. Elections, as the old adage goes, have consequences.
Yet Supreme Court nominations are never just about the law. Politics is always a centerpiece of the equation - and the politics of this trailblazing choice weren't lost on Obama.
Hispanics have been grousing since Bill Richardson's nomination as commerce secretary was torpedoed that they don't have enough seats at Obama's table. Sacking Louis Caldera as chief ofthe White House Military Office for authorizing the tone-deaf Air Force One Manhattan flyover last month didn't help soothe tensions.

Only a blithering idiot thinks that Republicans opposing Sotomayor will cost them Hispanic votes in future elections. These are the same people that said McCain would win Hispanic votes because he supported amnesty - he got a lower percentage than Bush.
The RACISTS Democrat Party evaluates EVERYONE by color, sex, race, heritage, sexual preference, etc....NOT by qualifications....it would be easy to state that. Need to get Wayne Perryman out in front of camera’s....he’s a big, black American who wrote the book, Unfounded Loyalty about how the DEMS have screwed the Black population.....but, I dream.
Exactly. The hispanics have “blue” blood and most of them want freebies from Tio sammy. I still remember on KFI when Karl Rove spoke at a La raza meeting but was boo’d incesaantly when he spoke about closing the borders.
In reality it will take at least 2-8 years before the matter is clarified based on a new composition to the House / senate and or subsequent lawful over throw of the Obama regime. Then again, based on the testicular fortitude of the GOP and its minions, it may take a third party.
I thought it took at least one GOP vote to get a nominee out of the judiciary committe? S.P.E.C.T.R.E. isn’t there anymore so who’s gonna be the one GOP vote? Am I wrong on this?
Snowe, McCain, Lindsey, Collins, etc etc
Submit. Resistance is futile, we’re told.
Sotomayer is clearly the most radical choice. She is abrasive, she has liberal critics who question her intellect, and she has a closet full of inflamatory quotes and controversial decisions. Is is possible Obama selected her knowing the opposition, including moderate Dems, would mobilize and block her? After that, his true pick could just breeze right in.
Perhaps that explains some of assholerods and others’ comments.
Democrat strategists understand three basic things:
1. If you keep the ball in play for as long as possible, anything can happen.
2. If you can convince your opponent that your win is a foregone conclusion, they will concede the game before it begins.
3. Democrats know that the Republican desire to be "liked," and their desire to be seen taking the "High Road" leads them to the second outcome.
Republicans just don't like the messy parts of the game. Democrats will convince Republicans to just not put up a fight, every time. Then they kick Republican ass, every time. And then they'll be back to talk Republicans out of playing the next game, every time.

I believe matters will come to a head in about 18 months, and that it will take between 6 and 12 months to restore a legitimate government at Washington.
The existing Congress, by legislating in matters where it has no authority and by redelegating powers the People gave to them specifically has, in essence, abdicated. Obama is a symptom, he's not a cause.
There are approximately ten million armed men of military age who have sworn an oath of fidelity to the Constitution, and who are furthermore sworn to protect it against enemies, even domestic ones.
Something will happen to put that army in motion, and the rotten structure that has led to this catastrophe will collapse.
The GOP isn’t getting the hispanic vote regardless.
She is said to be stupid and hate white men...if she gets on she won’t be too successful with Kennedy and Breyer, will she! And if she pulls her race/sex card around Thomas, I don’t think he would be all that nice about it.
Since she’s stupid and picks staff by their race rather than their brains and she hates the constituion, she’ll have a tough time conviencing anyone to go along with her dictator policy making routine. Since she’s a nasty thing, she’ll feel very angry there or she’ll shut up and do her job and pout. She has no one to run to and tell on those bad old white boys for not obeying her superior female latino demandments.
Oh good: the media are giving the GOP an excuse not to show any spine whatsoever!
So what do we call the top-ranked GOP member of Congress?
Amoeba-in-Chief?
Protozoan Pater?
C’mon guys, help me out here!
It never was... There are no MEN in the GOP!!
Yes, presumably they can do elementary-school math.
"she's a slam dunk for confirmation."
Which, of course, isn't the POINT anymore...
First they have to whip their way out of the wet paper bag and that aint near to happening.
