Pit bulls raised to be vicious fighters by former pro football quarterback Michael Vick are slowly getting used to life outside the ring and moving toward adoption with help of a southern Utah animal sanctuary.
One of the dogs has even been adopted as a "paw" pal by a group of special-needs students in Louisville, Ky.
Best Friends Animal Society's Barbara Williams said this week that the animals are making steady progress since 22 of the 47 seized from Vick's property arrived scared and confused in Kanab on Jan. 2, 2008. The remaining dogs were sent to other animal sanctuaries in the U.S.
Williams said one dog from Best Friends has been put in foster care; others are working to earn certificates that show they have received proper training in manners and socialization.

I agree. I had a German Shepherd who was a good guard dog but when my girlfriend’s rabbit escaped from his cage, all my dog did was lick him.
I’m sorry for the plight of these animals. But,,,, having seen what my friend’s well-mannered Staffordshire did to his leg, I would never trust one of vick’s dogs, no matter how well they’ve been re-trained, no matter how many certificates they receive. No way!
Those dogs should of been put down. Most have already tasted blood.

That’s a thoughtless remark. These animals have lives too. I consider their lives far more valuable than Vick’s.
I’d never let a dog with that destructive potential and background anywhere near my family. That would be reckless in the extreme to expose your family and neighborhood to something with the potential to do so much harm if it had a bad day. Need a dog? Get a lab or a beagle not an abused pitbull. I really fail to see why anybody wants a dog that has so much power to kill or maim. Best and most common case you have a good pet. Worse is that somebody gets hurt or worse. Whats the point of risking that when there are dozens of breeds that can provide wonderful companionship without posing a risk to those around them?

My friend’s dog Daisy was a complete sweetheart. Bred well. Raised in a loving home. Bred twice because of her championship bloodlines. I’d go over to Doug’s house and she’d immediately roll on her back for a tummy rub. A delightful pet! One day Doug was talking to a friend on the phone. He was standing in the living room. Daisy attacked him, and latched onto his thigh. He was able to kill her with an aluminum baseball bat. His friend on the phone heard him screaming and called the cops and paramedics. The docs said that if they had been a couple minutes later in arriving, my friend would have bled out. Over 80 stitches!
It wasn’t *thoughtless* at all. Tell me that after you’ve been to your friend’s mom’s funeral.
BTW: Vick will get his.
Human life, no matter how misspent, is infinitely more valuable than that of any animal.

For example, if someone broke into my house and was in the process of killing one of my dogs who was doing its job protecting the place, I'd use lethal force to stop them.
If, osama bin laden and my dog were struggling to get out of rip current and it was obvious neither were going to make it without out some help and I can only save one, I'm helping my dog.
Acid test: Any animal's life is less valuable than, say, Bin Laden's?
In anycase, I disagree with your statement. I can think of many human lives I do not value, including many politicians.

It’s hard to consider many of the animals who fight in these events as “dogs”. They are bred beyond any ability to coexist with humans or other dogs. I saw a heartbreaking segment on Animal Planet wherein there was a dog so aggressive and violent that he would slam himself against a cage or chew the wire until his mouth poured out blood. They could not stop him. They had to put him down or he would have died a horrific infection-laden death.
