President Barack Obama defended on Sunday his amicable first encounter with Venezuelan leader and anti-US firebrand Hugo Chavez, which critics back home assailed as naiive and "irresponsible".
"It's unlikely that as a consequence of me shaking hands or having a polite conversation with Mr. Chavez that we are endangering the strategic interest of the United States," Obama told reporters at the close of a Summit of the Americas.
But, he stressed he still had concerns about Venezuela and Chavez's often heated rhetoric.
"I have great differences with Hugo Chavez on matters of economic policy and matters of foreign policy," Obama said.
"There have been instances in which we've seen Venezuela interfere with some of the countries that surround Venezuela in ways that I think are a source of concern," he added.

That's actually true.
Pres--ent Ubama would be endangering the strategic interest of The United States whether he and Chavez shared a soul-brother handshake or not.
Obama is a moral zero, but he’s also incredibly naive. Those photos are used to strengthen dictators at home. To elevate them to the level of *equal* to an American president. And we got NOTHING out of it.
Obama is un-American. A traitor to everything we hold dear. Within 4 years, he will damage this nation deeply, perhaps irreparably.
It seems Obama disagrees with Hugo’s economic and foreign policy. He, of course, does not disagree with his Marxist domestic policies that have jeopardized the political freedom that existed in the former democracy.
It's what kings do.
I predict this Obama-Chavez story will not end well....
And its more than the practical effects. Chavez is a thug, despot, and murderer. He is the self-appointed heir of Fidel. He is an ally of Iran. And obama the zero is looking at him with sincere warmth and a sincere heartfelt smile.
THAT is why the photo is an issue. Nobody in North or South America is more hostile to traditional America.
And Obama is not somber at the prospect of meeting him. The Treasonous Kenyan Communist Bas*@#rd.
And thats also a lie anyway that he opposes Hugos foreign policy. When the hostages in Columbia were freed, the congressional Democrats were found in the captured laptop as supporting him.
Dems also were supporting Venezuelan goals in supporting FARC. Obama the liar is a communist, and fully supports his economic and foreign policy. Hugo nationalized businesses, check. Hugo suppressed opposition, check. Hugo stole an election through fraud, check. Hugo supports islam over America, check. Hugo loves Cuban communists, check.
Obama is Hugo’s shine boy.
All true, and I still blame all those who hold conservative views and did not vote for McCain because he is not conservative enough for them.
