"What languages do austria speak?

In: Non-English Languages and Cultures [Edit categories]

Austrian people speak Austrian, which is very close to German. So they can probably speak and understand German without any difficulty.

Wikianswers?

A better source would be the CIA Factbook, which says:

Languages: German (official nationwide) 88.6%, Turkish 2.3%, Serbian 2.2%, Croatian (official in Burgenland) 1.6%, other (includes Slovene, official in Carinthia, and Hungarian, official in Burgenland) 5.3% (2001 census)

Austrian is a language like American is a language (which is to say, it isn't.) It's at best a dialect.

My sources?

CIA Factbook:

Languages: German (official nationwide) 88.6%, Turkish 2.3%, Serbian 2.2%, Croatian (official in Burgenland) 1.6%, other (includes Slovene, official in Carinthia, and Hungarian, official in Burgenland) 5.3% (2001 census)

or, if you trust the CIA as much as anybody else should (which is to say, not at all) how about the Austrian Embassy to the U.S.A.:

Official Languages: German, locally also Slovene, Hungarian, and Croatian

Anything that starts with "Wiki" should probably not be trusted implicitly where His Ohness is concerned.

WIKI - In any form, shouldn't be used as a definitive source. In this case the answer you have posted isn't correct...

AUSTRIA — Britannica Student Encyclopedia
http://student.britannica.com/comptons/atlas?geogId=19

Official name Republik Österreich (Republic of Austria)
Form of government federal state with two legislative houses (Federal Council [62]; National Council [183])
Chief of state President
Head of government Chancellor
Capital Vienna
Official language German
Official religion none
Monetary unit euro (€)
Population estimate (2008) 8,338,000
Total area (sq mi) 32,383
Total area (sq km) 83,871

THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF AUSTRIA ISN'T AUSTRIAN... It is GERMAN.

[It's sort of like Spanish — In Mexico if you speak Castillian Spanish (the form spoken in Spain, and taught in most schools), Mexicans will be able to understand you, but many of the words are a bit different when you learn MEXICAN Spanish. But, it's ALL called “Spanish”.]

Just FYI: The person you are relying on for that answer, also thinks Antarctica recently had a name change, and that the word “Eleventh” has 4 syllables...

Best to check your sources when relying on an unknown person to supply your facts...

Some Obama supporter must have rushed THAT into wiki. "Probably" understand? Ridiculous!

There's no such language as "Austrian". There are a number of different Austrian dialects of German, but they differ a good deal from each other -- there is no one "Austrian" dialect, even.
