The Shanghai-based NGS supermarket Group withdrew Johnson & Johnson's infant bath products from its 3,500 supermarkets and convenience stores in East China, after these were alleged to contain carcinogens on Monday.
"Although no official test results were shown, we made such a move for the sake of our customers' health, especially that of kids," a staff at Shanghai Changning district's NGS supermarket, who called herself Xu, told China Daily yesterday.
"We are waiting for the test results from the authorities to decide when to put them back on the shelves," she said.
The company's baby shampoo was found to contain both formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane during a test conducted at an independent laboratory in the United States, commissioned by the non-profit Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.
"We have to be responsible to consumers and suspend sales of these products until they are proven safe," Gan Pingzhong, quality supervision department manager of NGS Group, was quoted by Xinhua as having said on Tuesday.
So far no other major retailers took similar action, but some of them admitted that the "tainted" products were not selling as well as before.
"Few people come to buy Johnson & Johnson's infant products, once very popular among young parents," Xiao Tian, a cashier at Shanghai's Jiadeli Supermarket, said. "After all, no parents want to run the risk of using products of uncertain quality for their children."
"The concerned authorities and the company should release the test reports as soon as possible. What consumers need is respect, not deception or fraud," Chun Guan, a customer, said.
China's quality supervisor, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, denied media reports yesterday that the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration has already checked Johnson & Johnson's baby products.
Till yesterday, more than 50,000 people responded to an online survey on Sina.com.cn, of whom more than 60 percent said they would not buy the brand.

Last week an advocacy group, Campaign for Safe Cosmetics had released a report featuring 48 baby bath and care products containing trace amounts of either formaldehyde, 1,4-dioxane or both, but Johnson and Johnson products in China have been cleared.
When the report was initially released, Chinese stores pulled Johnson and Johnson shampoos and other baby products from store shelves.
The Chinese health authority tested 33 products sold in the country, all of which came back negative for any presence of toxic chemicals.
The State Food and Drug Administration released a statement saying: “The State Food and Drug Administration will continue to closely monitor the situation and do testing in a timely manner,” it said.
Because baby product manufacturers to not intend to put cancer causing chemicals in their products, they are not obligated to put any warning of such on the labels of those products.

After the controversy created by a recently released study from the advocacy group Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, manufacturer Johnson and Johnson has disputed the allegations about carcinogen content in their baby products. The company has countered that the trace amounts of the compounds identified in the report were the result of processes that are performed to ensure that the product is gentle for babies and safe from bacteria growth.

The Shanghai-based supermarket chain Nonggongshang Supermarket Group took Johnson and Johnson products off the shelves of their 3,500 outlets. Other big chains in China such as Wal-Mart and Carrefour, however, have chosen to still carry the products.
This has prompted Chinese health authorities to test the products. The State Food and Drug Administration have subjected 33 Johnson and Johnson products, including the baby shampoo mentioned in the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics report. Their results indicate that there is no evidence of carcinogens in Johnson and Johnson products.
In support of the declaration of the Chinese health officials, Johnson and Johnson said further that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as well as other government agencies have considered the trace levels of the compounds in question as safe.
For its part, the State Food and Drug Administration have declared through their website that the agency will continue to monitor the allegations and perform tests in a timely manner.
Campaign for Safe Cosmetics tested 48 products and released the report about two weeks ago. The advocacy group tested the products for presence of two known carcinogens: formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane. Among the products tested that showed traces of the alleged carcinogens were Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo.

China clears Johnson & Johnson products after probe

BEIJING: China’s State Food and Drug Administration has cleared baby products manufactured by Johnson & Johnson after a high-profile and widely publicized investigation to determine if they contained potential carcinogens. The Administration launched its probe on the basis of allegations leveled by an US based activist group.
The Administration said in a statement that its Shanghai office had no contamination by formaldehyde, or 1,4-dioxane, in 33 products that were investigated. They included 14 bath or sanitary-related items.
“The State Food and Drug Administration will continue to closely monitor the situation and do testing in a timely manner,” the statement said.
The US based group, Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, had named baby shampoo and other products of dozens of manufacturers including Johnson & Johnson as containing formaldehyde, or 1,4-dioxane.
The charges caused a bit of panic in China, where product safety has become a major issue because of recent scandals like the melamine contamination in daily milk of one of the major producers. Nong Gong Shang, a Shanghai-based supermarket chain, removed Johnson Baby Shampoo from its shelves. Another supermarket in the central city of Chongqing pulled three kinds of baby products from their shelves.
Another official agency, General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. also carried out tests on 31 batches of bath products made by Johnson & Johnson’s China operations. The tests showed they met the standard for formaldehyde, the official Xinhua news agency said.
