Outpouring of Skeptical Scientists Continues as 59 Scientists Added to Senate Report

‘The science has, quite simply, gone awry’

Washington DC: Fifty nine additional scientists from around the world have been added to the U.S. Senate Minority Report of dissenting scientists, pushing the total to over 700 skeptical international scientists – a dramatic increase from the original 650 scientists featured in the initial December 11, 2008 release. The 59 additional scientists added to the 255-page Senate Minority report since the initial release 13 ½ weeks ago represents an average of over four skeptical scientists a week.  This updated report – which includes yet another former UN IPCC scientist – represents an additional 300 (and growing) scientists and climate researchers since the initial report’s release in December 2007.

The over 700 dissenting scientists are now more than 13 times the number of UN scientists (52) who authored the media-hyped IPCC 2007 Summary for Policymakers. The 59 additional scientists hail from all over the world, including Japan, Italy, UK, Czech Republic, the U.S. and many are affiliated with prestigious institutions including, NASA, U.S. Navy, U.S. Defense Department, Energy Department, U.S. Air Force, the Philosophical Society of Washington (the oldest scientific society in Washington), Princeton University, Tulane University, American University, Oregon State University, U.S. Naval Academy and EPA.

The explosion of skeptical scientific voices is accelerating unabated in 2009. A March 14, 2009 article in the Australian revealed that Japanese scientists are now at the forefront of rejecting man-made climate fears prompted by the UN IPCC.

Prominent Japanese Geologist Dr. Shigenori Maruyama, a professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology’s Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences who has authored more than 125 scientific publications, said in March 2009 that “there was widespread skepticism among his colleagues about the IPCC's fourth and latest assessment report that most of the observed global temperature increase since the mid-20th century ‘is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations.” Maruyama noted that when this question was raised at a Japan Geoscience Union symposium last year, ‘the result showed 90 per cent of the participants do not believe the IPCC report.”  [Also See: The prestigious International Geological Congress, dubbed the geologists' equivalent of the Olympic Games, was held in Norway in August 2008 and prominently featured the voices of scientists skeptical of man-made global warming fears. [See: Skeptical scientists overwhelm conference: '2/3 of presenters and question-askers were hostile to, even dismissive of, the UN IPCC' & see full reports here & here –More analyses of recent developments see report’s introduction here. ]

“I do not find the supposed scientific consensus among my colleagues,” noted Earth Scientist Dr. Javier Cuadros on March 3, 2009. Cuadros is of the UK Natural History Museum, who specializes in Clay Mineralogy and has published more than 30 scientific papers.

Award-Winning Princeton University Physicist Dr. Robert H. Austin, who has published 170 scientific papers, was elected a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences lamented the current fears over global warming.

“Unfortunately, Climate Science has become Political Science…It is tragic that some perhaps well-meaning but politically motivated scientists who should know better have whipped up a global frenzy about a phenomena which is statistically questionable at best,” Austin told the minority staff on the Environment and Public Works Committee on March 2, 2009.

‘Could turn the climate change world upside down’

The rise in skeptical scientists are responding not only to an increase in dire “predictions” of climate change, but also a steady stream of peer-reviewed studies, analyses, real world data, and inconvenient developments have further cast doubts on the claims of man-made global warming fear activists. The latest peer-reviewed study in Geophysical Research Letters is being touted as a development that “could turn the climate change world upside down.” The study finds that the “Earth is undergoing natural climate shift.” The March 15, 2009 article in WISN.com details the research of Dr. Anastasios Tsonis of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. “We realized a lot of changes in the past century from warmer to cooler and then back to warmer were all natural," Tsonis said. “I don't think we can say much about what the humans are doing,” he added.

Tsonis further added: “The temperature has flattened and is actually going down. We are seeing a new shift towards cooler temperatures that will last for probably about three decades.” [ See also:  Peer-Reviewed Study Finds Global Warming could stop 'for up to 30 years! Climate ‘primarily being driven by natural forcing mechanisms

Climatologist and Paloeclimate researcher Dr. Diane Douglas, who has authored or edited over 200 technical reports, also declared natural factors are dominating climate, not CO2. “The recent ‘panic’ to control GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions and billions of dollars being dedicated for the task has me deeply concerned that US, and other countries are spending precious global funds to stop global warming, when it is primarily being driven by natural forcing mechanisms,” Douglas, who is releasing a major new paper she authored that will be presented at a UNESCO conference in Ghent, Belgium on March 20, 2009, told the minority staff on the Environment and Public Works Committee on March 10, 2009.

Retired Award Winning NASA Atmospheric Scientist Dr. William W. Vaughan, recipient of the NASA Exceptional Service Medal, a former Division Chief of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and author of more than 100 refereed journal articles, monographs, and papers, also now points to natural causes of recent climate changes. “The cause of these global changes is fundamentally due to the Sun and its effect on the Earth as it moves about in its orbit. Not from man-made activities,” Vaughan told the minority staff on the Environment and Public Works Committee on February 6, 2009.

Geology Professor Uberto Crescenti of the University G.d'Annunzio in Italy, the past president of the Society of Italian Geologists also agrees that nature, not mankind is ruling the climate. “I think that climatic changes have natural causes according to geological data…I am very glad to sign the U.S. Senate’s report of scientists against the theory of man-made global warming,” Crescenti told the minority staff on the Environment and Public Works Committee on January 15, 2009.

UN IPCC Scientist Dr. Steven M. Japar, a PhD atmospheric chemist who was part of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) Second (1995) and Third (2001) Assessment Reports, and has authored 83 peer-reviewed publications and in the areas of climate change, atmospheric chemistry, air pollutions and vehicle emissions, challenged the IPCC’s climate claims.

“Temperature measurements show that the [climate model-predicted mid-troposphere] hot zone is non-existent. This is more than sufficient to invalidate global climate models and projections made with them!” Japar told the minority staff on the Environment and Public Works Committee on January 7, 2009.

Botanist Dr. David Bellamy, a famed UK environmental campaigner, former lecturer at Durham University, and host of a popular UK TV series on wildlife, says the international promotion of man-made global warming fears are nearing their end. (Note: Bellamy was in the original 2007 U.S. Senate report.]  The science has, quite simply, gone awry. In fact, it’s not even science any more, it’s anti-science,” Bellamy, who used to believe in man-made warming, declared on November 5, 2008.

‘Journalistic malpractice

Chemist Dr. Mark L. Campbell, a professor of chemistry at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, who has published numerous studies in the Journal of the American Chemical Society on topics such as methane, squarely blames the media for promoting unfounded climate fears. “The sky is not burning, and to claim that it is amounts to journalistic malpractice…the press only promotes the global warming alarmists and ignores or minimizes those of us who are skeptical,” Chapman wrote on January 13, 2009.

8 Dems oppose quick debate on global warming bill

By ANDREW TAYLOR – 1 hour ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — Eight Senate Democrats are opposing speedy action on President Barack Obama's bill to combat global warming, complicating prospects for the legislation and creating problems for their party's leaders.

The eight Democrats disapprove of using the annual budget debate to pass Obama's "cap and trade" bill to fight greenhouse gas emissions, a measure that divides lawmakers, environmentalists and businesses.

The lawmakers' opposition makes it more difficult for Democratic leaders to move the bill without a threat of a Republican filibuster.

The budget debate is the only way to circumvent Senate rules that allow a unified GOP to stop a bill through filibusters.

"Enactment of a cap-and-trade regime is likely to influence nearly every feature of the U.S. economy," wrote the Democratic senators, mostly moderates. They were joined by 25 Republicans. "Legislation so far-reaching should be fully vetted and given appropriate time for debate." It takes 60 votes to overcome a filibuster in the Senate, but Democrats and allied independents currently control 58 seats.

Under a cap and trade system, the government would auction off permits to emit greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. The auctions would raise almost $650 billion over the next decade, with the cost passed on to consumers as higher energy prices.

The cap and trade proposal is highly controversial, especially in heavily industrialized states and regions where people get their electricity from coal-fired power plants. Obama's promise to use most of the revenue to award $400 tax credits to most workers hasn't quelled the controversy since the increases in utility bills could easily exceed the amount of the tax cut.

The Democrats who signed the letter, addressed to the chairman and top Republican on the Senate Budget Committee, were: Robert Byrd, W.Va.; Blanche Lincoln, Ark.; Mary Landrieu, La.; Carl Levin, Mich.; Evan Bayh, Ind.; Ben Nelson, Neb.; Bob Casey Jr., Pa.; and Mark Pryor, Ark. The 25 Republicans were led by Sen. Mike Johanns of Nebraska.

Fast-track budget rules were used to enact President George W. Bush's tax cuts and two major budget bills during the Clinton administration, including a 1993 measure that failed to win a single GOP vote.

The House and Senate Budget committees are slated to vote on the budget resolution next week, with Senate debate scheduled for the week of March 30.

There also has been speculation that the expedited rules could be used to pass a health care overhaul bill, but senior Senate Democrats such as Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., oppose the idea, saying health reform must be enacted on a bipartisan basis.

The White House is open to the idea of using the fast-track rules for both global warming and health care. "We would prefer not to start there, but we're not taking anything off the table at this point," White House budget chief Peter Orszag said last week.

EPA proposes greenhouse gas registry – A first step for climate policy

EPA proposes greenhouse gas registry – A first step for climate policy

On March 10 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that it will propose a new rule to require greenhouse gas emissions reporting from thousands of businesses nationwide – a prerequisite for any effective climate change program.

A greenhouse gas registry is a database for collecting, verifying, and tracking emissions from specific industrial sources.

Late in 2007 Congress ordered the Bush EPA to create just such a greenhouse gas emissions reporting rule. Not surprisingly, the Bush administration missed its first deadline for publishing a draft of the rule and let the process languish.

However, a good amount of work was done by EPA staff – work that is finally seeing the light of day.

According to the EPA’s press release, the draft rule would require about 13,000 facilities to report greenhouse gas emissions.

The agency estimates the reporting will cover 85 to 90 percent of U.S. emissions.

The rule accomplishes this by requiring reports to include “upstream” sources such as fossil fuel suppliers, as well as motor vehicles and stationary sources such as cement plants and power plants. There will be a sixty-day comment period during which the agency will hold two public hearings on the draft rule.

The proposed threshold for reporting greenhouse gases is 25,000 tons per year of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). Because carbon is only one of at least six gases covered by the draft rule, and each gas has a different impact on global warming, the impacts are measured as CO2e.

The proposed rule does not require third-party certification of a company’s emissions report, without which there will be less certainty and accountability. The draft rule does, however, require electronic reporting, and intends to use existing reporting programs where practicable and develop a new reporting system for all other cases.

A comprehensive emissions registry is crucial to ensuring efficiency and accountability in any forthcoming climate change legislation. We cannot reduce greenhouse gas emissions if we do not know who is emitting and how much.

Congress is now drafting greenhouse gas cap-and-trade legislation. For any such program to work well, data on the emissions of every covered facility are required so that the appropriate number of carbon “credits” are allocated. The data also help ensure emissions reductions are actually being made. The European Union moved ahead with its cap-and-trade program before it had a decent accounting of per-facility emissions.

The price of carbon crashed when it became clear that too many credits had been allocated, eliminating the incentive to cut emissions. The Europeans fixed the problem and are working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The EPA’s new draft rule should help the U.S. avoid Europe’s mistake. Unfortunately, the Bush administration’s inaction has cost us vital time. The proposed registry would not begin collecting data until 2011 for emissions in 2010.

Paging Algore...we want our Nobel prize back.

One sentence pretty much sums it up: “Climate science has become political science”.

And that’s the problem.

If this Global Warming doesn’t stop we’re all going to Freeze to Death. There is no such thing as Global Warming or Climate Change, they are just scams for corrupt politicians to get leverage and raise taxes to enslave us. The liberal mind needs everybody to love them, even inanimate objects like trees, water and air. Since they are living immoral lifestyles their Earth religion is an easy way to become morally superior w/o having to change their lifestyles. Earth worship is an opiate for the braindead masses. Global warming is a war that even liberals will fight since the only casualties are capitalists....& employees.

The Green movement is really the old Red Movement w/better advertising. The sad part is that most capitalists have fallen victim to this feel goodism that the farce brings. Just as there was no hole in the ozone layer caused by man there is no greenhouse gasses either. These are terms that scientist hypothesized and then conveniently declared consensus to eliminate discussion or further research. The research has shown not only is there no Global Warming but the earth is actually cooling. Nobody has to tell NE, WI or DC this year. Well, DC has its own excess Carbon Emissions.

Why does the scientific and political world continue to tell algore’s myth? There are a myriad of reasons but the real one is that the Dems want to use the issue to club Repubs w/it for their expansion of gummit. They have been nurturing this Green fib for decades. If they are the Green Party then everything they say having to do w/the earth will be considered truth. Having the Establishment media and Establishment Hollyweird promoting their claim America has accepted it. Libs have become the self appointed protectors of the earth and all that is relates to that stewardship. If the truth that there is no GW using fossil fuels, then there would be no reasons not to exploit the resources. This is their ultimate fear, our Freedom.

Earth worship is made to order for liberal women who want to be moralistic w/o any self discipline. They mearly stick a No Oil sticker on their car, recycle their water bottles and carry condoms to be ethically superiority to everybody who doesn’t. These women are so believing this cult that they mindlessly follow the Global Warming dogma like blind baby seals in a Polar Bear den.

The hook for these braindead libs with their Junk Science is that they can say anything they want and since there is no fact checking they can make the most ridiculous claims and never be challenged. Everyone remembers how we would all die from Acid Rain when the only acid we are suffering under is all that acid during Woodstock. We also hear how green Windmills are, when in reality they don’t hold a candle to Nuclear or Coal power. Nuclear is far more dependable, cleaner and cheaper than wind, yet these same braindeads have poisoned the nuclear well on fictitious fears. Coal has even fewer reasons for not expanding due to plentiful supplies so they need the Global Scamming argument. More consensus science to shackle this entire Country to oppressive electric bills that will soon triple.

Just like recycling is an inefficient way of reprocessing materials to the point of costing far more to collect than it is worth, so too are the boogeyman industries of the Left. By far the most efficient and cleanest way to move people over distances is by car. Oil and gas are the easiest and most perfect forms of energy available. The simplicity of moving oil from the well to the tank is one of the greatest accomplishments of mankind. The Earth Nazis are destroying man’s greatest invention for purely selfish political reasons. The Earth Zombies want nothing more than to destroy Freedom and enslave us to their universal poverty.

The most sickening display of complete idiocy is their war on the housing industry. God’s most perfect solar panel, is the tree and they have made harvesting these solar collectors a crime of the highest order. Right down there w/drilling for oil. The Earth Nazis have decided that the only type of house you can own is a Green house which means only petroleum products or dung. The tree is the easiest and most efficient method of producing materials to make houses. All you have to do is plant a seed and wait 20 yrs and you have the most perfect material to build a house. There are thousands of square miles to grow these forests outside of Manhattan and DC cept those Earth Nazis will not allow you to harvest these trees. In some cases trees that are already dead and only need hauling to the mill yet must be left to burn. That is the logic of the Earthists. Trees are the only truly Green housing material.

The Earth Thugs are attempting to put us all in their economic Death Camps using Global Scamming to reach that goal. They are enslaving us to high priced gas/electricity that will be in short supplies. They have not allowed the development of our resources which was a huge factor in this economic crisis. They will not allow any form of energy development no matter how clean claiming Climate Change. They hide behind their mythical alternative energy facade which is decades away if ever. They need us out of our houses and cars living as a Turd World Country to gain power. This is their means to an end and they believe that when they destroy America they have done their Earth godess’ will. There is no science behind this myth, only a consensus of corrupt scientists who all believe and want the same outcome, destruction. God’s earth is fine, its the Green Earth Mamas who have eaten too much Acid Reign. Rather, we need to break the Earth Nazi’s shackles and let Freedom Reign.

Pray for America, Our Troops and obama’s Failure

Whether one believes in man-made global warming or not, the REAL reason to develop advanced, renewable energy technologies as a Manhattan Project-like effort is to defeat islam!!!!

The islamic threat is real, so lets do it!!!!

Of course, an energy program to defeat islam will be much less coercive than what the global-warming crowd envision. GOOD!!!!

OMgosh.... You’re so right. I never thought of it in quite those terms, but you’re dead on. Can you imagine if, all of a sudden, “hatred of oil” was repackaged as “defeating Islam”? It would soon become federal law that every American own a minimum of three SUV’s!

It is a total fraud upon the people that congress is not forced to recuse themselves from voting on any global or carbon bills if they have any stocks, hedge funds or own companies that would benefit from their vote.

We need to alert everyone as to who personally benefits to this sham at the expense of the public interest.

Nancy Pelosi needs to divest in T Boone Pickens CLNE or recuse herself. Al Gore needs to sign up as a lobbyist who owns a hedge fund that will benefit in carbon credits.

Absolutely insane and communistic that they can create their own mega wealth off of taxpayers as they destroy corporations and citizens ability to make a living.

“its about taking AMERICA FREEDOM AWAY”

not necessarily. If AGW was a real problem we would be building more nuclear plants...and we probably should do that anyway.

well the arabs also have a lot of desert and they could use that for solar power.
