Probably - I have a large book here, with photos of the damage the union troops did to Washington’s church. But I can’t post any of the photos.
Anyway, it is more than a little disturbing.

The Civil War was a nasty, vicious, ugly war (what war isn’t?). I’m sure there were countless abuses on both sides of it on the part of some of the soldiers. Whenever you have a large group of society gathered in less than optimal conditions you will have among them all manner of disrespectful “uncivilized” men as well (Heck, there will be a smattering of truly evil men in there on both sides as well). Nothing one can do about that - it’s the nature of man, and the nature of war itself, really.
It’s still a shame though — in a perfect world none of it would be necessary, but alas, this world is far from perfect...
