WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican Senator John McCain, who battled Barack Obama hard on the campaign trail on the Iraq war, said on Friday he supports President Obama's plans to remove U.S. combat forces from Iraq over 19 months.

"Overall it is a reasonable plan and one that can work and I support it," McCain told Reuters.

McCain, as a presidential candidate in the 2008 election, had argued that Obama was naive on national security and criticized his pledge to pull U.S. troops from Iraq within 16 months.

If the Generals say that it is a good idea, then I support it, too.

Thanks to Bush, we will be able to leave Iraq with victory.

Just commenting on the timeline... it's nothing new or surprising. The war was won by Bush/Petreaus through the Surge and strengthened Iraqi federalism.

Bush already sealed the deal that by 2011 the majority of troops would be back home.

Obama is merely adding a defeatist angle to it, in order not to legitimize "Bush's war", while taking the credit for ending it.

I’ll go along with the generals too. I’m not interested in McCain’s thoughts or what the Kenyan thinks.

Bush’s Iraq-USA 2008 SOFA said combat troops will pullout in July 2010. So this is later. Supposed to be complete by year end 2010.

Victory allows you to do that, return your combat troops to home.

What no one is talking about is the 50,000 trainers Obama left behind in Iraq.

Thanks for nothing, McCain. If you had spent more time during the campaign criticizing 0bama and the Democrats’ economic ideas and policies, you might have won the election and wouldn’t be making yourself look like a fool by pulling a 180 on Iraq now.

We’ve won the war in Iraq, and there is already a force reduction agreement in effect.

McCain said the troops would be there through the national election, and as many as 50,000 would remain indefinitely. The circumstances have changed dramatically since the campaign, and bringing our troops home with dignity is fine with me.

I don’t see a problem with this.

Welcome to the ash heap of history!

John, have you met Harold Stassen? He’s right over there on the couch with Sidney, Clayton and Jugdish.

This is nonsense. Bush already agreed with the Iraqis that by 2011 we'll bring home most troops. McCain did not an U turn on this. We have won the war. But Obama makes it look like he is "ending" it.

What McCain (and every other pubbie) SHOULD do is exposing this to America. We are bringing the troops home as Bush promised.

I agree that McCain is making a fool of himself and to do so is nonsense. But he apparently actually wants to compromise his public image (and by inference that of the Republican Party as a whole to some extent) by discrediting his own presidential campaign rhetoric now for no otherwise discernable reason.

Understand that my comment has nothing whatsoever to do with whether 0bama in reality is conforming to Bush's withdrawal plan or not.

Future quotes from McCain's Leg Tingle Obama Love Tour:

"I think the President's initiative to ban firearms that look like assault weapons is a sound and necessary plan to save Mexico."

"President Obama's Universal Healthcare Plan is needed to provide for all God's Children"

"The President's Amnesty package is long overdue to provide legitimacy to our large segment of mortage defaulted homeowners"

"The Obama administration should be applauded for enacting my plan on Cap and Trade"

Why doesn't he just go ahead and officially join the Marxist party. The North Vietnamese indoctrination of him seems to have worked.

“...he supports President Obama’s plans to remove U.S. combat forces from Iraq over 19 months.”

Did McCain have his kneepads on when he said this? I just can’t get over that guy. What happened to his psyche after the Vietnamese let him go?

Ah, I know—he became a senator.
