Federal judges on Monday tentatively ordered California to release tens of thousands of inmates, up to a third of all prisoners, in the next three years to stop dangerous overcrowding.
As many as 57,000 could be let go if the current population were cut by the maximum percentage considered by a three-judge panel. Judges said the move could be done without threatening public safety -- and might improve a public safety hazard.
The state immediately said it would appeal the final ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Trend-setting California, the Golden State, has an immense prison system responsible for nearly 170,000 inmates, and their care has become a major political and budget issue as officials weigh multibillion costs of improved facilities against death and illness behind bars.
State officials say new doctors, nurses and prison rules have improved care and cut the dangers of living behind bars.
Meanwhile California is staggering through budget crisis as its real estate market has collapsed and unemployment has spiked.
The three judges specifically said they planned to order the system, swollen to about double its capacity last year, to cut down to 120 percent to 145 percent of capacity within two to three years. They did not give a target headcount.

Never fear. Moonbeam Brown is going to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Mad Max is becoming more realistic than I once believed.
As goes California...
And that is not a pretty thought. At least they have good weather...
Just in time for National ‘’P-ss on the victims day’’. Party hearty Goober. Shazam!

I think their definition of “Dangerous” is dangerous.

If I had it to do I would turn loose the guys who dont pay their child support. The drunk drivers, the white collar criminals, the marijuana smokers, the prostitutes and others who have committed non-violent crimes.
California could save a lot of space by getting with the program and executing the 600 people they have on death row.
Gitmo is the gold standard for care. If you can’t meet the quality of Gitmo, you must improve or release.
The solution is to take care of judges
Releasing the prostitutes would be stimulative by adding small business back into the economy

MIGHT improve a public safety hazard?
So these judges want to release 57 thousand prisoners not due for release into society on the chance that it MIGHT help a situation?
So the judges expect the citizne to obey the law but when it suits them they simply change it?
Course there is no downside for the judges. They do not live or work in the areas the prisoners will end up in so they will ot see the results of their actions.
California can do this too, but it's gonna cost.
Maybe such a release would improve the intellectual environment there. ;-)
Hey!! Give the RATS credit. Releasing all these prisoners would be a great boon to the economy. Gun sales, law enforcement, the security industry, home renovation (to keep the thugs out)etc. would create many new jobs. Not to mention heathcare (injuries to victims and thugs).
Buy Guns.
There are hundreds of thousands of convicts across the nation who are TRULY not a threat to the health and safety of anyone, but by law must be separated from society. How about incarcerating THEM in abandoned MILITARY BASES. There are already built and standing facilities for everything from barracks, mess halls, admin building, and medical facilities just sitting idle. Would they not make very adequate MINIMUM SECURITY FACILITIES? The key is people who are truly NO THREAT to PUBLIC SAFETY. Any discussion?
“Send all of the illegal aliens out of the system and take them all back across the border... seal the border... problems... both of them... solved!”
And send all the dangerous American prisoners to live with Nancy Pelosi and the Hollywierd liberals.
I agree with you of course, but I would like to add that these people could be given jobs , or they could go out on work release and use the money they earn to pay for their room and board in prison.
Amen!!!

Why send them out to work. Since they aren’t a threat, let them move around the ‘base’. They could do the needed jobs, the laundry, cooking, some administration jobs, tend the library and run the coffee shop. These would NOT be dangerous people, but those who must legally removed from society for limited periods of time. As a military base is to a large extent ‘self sufficient’ so would this minimum security facility be. I think.
