John Thune introduced an amendment to scrap the entire stimulus, and replace it with an across the board middle class tax rebate. Ask the average American familywould you prefer Congress spend tens of millions on STD prevention and fish pathwaysor sent you a check for $10,286?
Thune Introduces Middle Class Tax Relief Amendment to the Stimulus Bill Middle Class Couples Would Receive up to $10,286
WASHINGTON, DC Senator John Thune today introduced an across-the-board middle class tax rebate amendment (S. AMDT #538) to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Senator Thunes amendment would strike the entire $936 billion Senate stimulus bill and replace it with a $936 billion across-the-board-middle-class tax rebate for 182 million Americans. The amendment would result in a tax rebate of $5,143 for single filers and $10,286 for married couples who file jointly. Eligibility is capped for all tax filers at 2007 adjusted gross income of $250,000.
There seems to be a great deal of discussion over how to spend American taxpayers money and future earnings. Instead of investing billions in wasteful government programs that won't provide immediate help to our troubled economy, my amendment invests in the American people, said Thune. I think most Americans believe they know how to best spend their own money and would rather have control over it than have the government create new federal programs, or waste it on pet pork projects that will not stimulate the economy. My amendment is an equitable way to ensure that virtually all working Americans benefit from this economic stimulus plan. This is substantial tax relief for middle class families.
In 2007, roughly 53 million joint and 76 million single tax returns were filed with an adjusted gross income of less than $250,000.
If people are serious about the need for this stimulus bill to be timely, the fastest way to inject money into our economy is through tax returns. We could have $936 billion into the economy by the end of the year. Taxpayers want help and they dont want us wasting their hard-earned tax dollars on programs that wont benefit anyone in the near future. This amendment addresses all of the nations leading economists who have said that any stimulus bill needs to be timely, targeted, and temporary.
Senator Thune explained his amendment on the floor of the U.S. Senate today. Video of his floor speech can be viewed here. The Senate is expected to vote on Senator Thunes amendment later this afternoon.
Good plan free money. Here it is come and get it.
Sounds reasonable.
Aye!
Democrats would never go along with anything that does not include a welfare payment to their non-taxpaying constituents.
Is this a refundable tax credit (read “free money”) or a real tax credit?
It’s OUR money....just being given back to us...
However, if every media outlet across the country put this out 24/7 over the weekend the Porkulus Bill would be DEAD.
Good idea - it at least shows America what kind of money they are about to have spent for them.
Unfortunately, we forget that a majority of people getting such a think would save/keep this money and not spend it - which is what we need in this economy right now. I’m all for savings, but unless people buy durable goods/others products and not just McDonald’s and the credit crunch/liquidity opens more so people can buy new cars, etc, then you’re going to see this job loss situation GET WORSE - not better. I’m all for scaling back the so called pork, but unfortunately, unless this stimulus happens we’re going to be frozen for three years and you’re going to see another record job loss in Feb too. You want that??? Also when people are out of work, crime rises, people get more sick, welfare increases, the list goes on and on.
Defunding the Beast, and leaving money in the pockets of Real People and the Free Market is far superior to burning it on the Obamapyre.
Plus, this is a political winner. We propose to give everyone $10K as a “stimulus”. Democrats have to vote against that, and for pork.
Hold a vote! We can’t win, of course, but we can demagogue that forever.
Doesn’t sound like it’s gonna get heard.
(Well, not really, but I appreciate Thune's attempt to frame this in a way the dumbasses out there could possibly comprehend. Instead, they'll watch their money handed out to deadbeats and sponges.
free money?
i paided that money I wouldnt mind some of it back...
“If you want it any time I can give it
But you better hurry ‘cause it’s going fast.
Did I hear you say that there must be a catch?”
Thune is a guy who I funded heavily to get into office, and to dump Little Tommy Daschle.
Thune is doing good work here. It might be time to send him some more money.
You're right. Democrats in Washington, DC are despicable, led by the most liberal of them all----BO....
Good for openers. But Richard McHugh’s money drop idea is better: Refund the past 10 years of income taxes to everybody.
Remember this is the guy who also kicked Little Tommy’s ass out of the Senate! And he has stones.
True. But the media is in the tank for Obama and will not go out of their way to push alternative Republican plans to the public, this much is known.
