Defence to invoke gay marriage as polygamy trial begins in B.C.

OTTAWA, VANCOUVER -- Same-sex marriage, they said, would be the slippery slope to polygamy. Just a few short years after Canadians engaged in a caustic debate over whether two men, or two women, should be allowed to marry, the prognosticators will find out if they are vindicated - however unhappily. The lawyer for Winston Blackmore, the man with 19 wives in the B.C. religious community of Bountiful who is to appear in court today on polygamy charges, says he will cite Canada's gay-marriage laws as part of his defence. It's an argument that people on both sides of the same-sex marriage fight were expecting: If same-sex marriage is justified under Charter rights to equality, then polygamy is justified under the Charter's protection of religious freedom In February, 2005, Vic Toews, who was then Justice critic for the opposition Conservatives, said changing the definition of marriage would open the door to court challenges from people who wanted polygamous unions. But even those who argued in favour of expanding the definition of marriage to include same-sex couples say they anticipated this sort of legal manoeuvre.

I didn’t expect this at all. Liberals assured me that gay marriage would end right there.

EXACTLY! PANDORA’S BOX IS NOW WIDE OPEN.

Daphne Gilbert, a law professor at the University of Ottawa, said the argument promised by Mr. Blackmore’s lawyer is predictable but without merit. The monogamous aspects of formal same-sex relationships are “actually in keeping with our view on marriage,” Prof. Gilbert said

So who’s view of Marriage wins? I guess it is anyone’s guess..
If Marriage means everything then it means nothing.

Hell. If gays and lesbians can marry, I do not know any reason why a man can’t have 19 wives. It is a slippery slope and in addition to my strong belief in the bible as the Word of God, it is true that if we go the path of gay marriage we go the path of perversions and/or a variety of sexual/relationship choices deserve the same rights. Period. Keep it simple. Marriage is between a one man and one woman. End of discussion.

Does Canadian law allow for same-sex polygamy?

To be expected. Polygamy is just the first next step. Animals, children, siblings....

:(

SLIPPERY SLOPE?

How about brother and sister?

No? Worried about if they get pregnant? Abortion is legal.

Not good enough?

Then two sisters or brothers should be allowed at least.

Hell. If gays and lesbians can marry, I do not know any reason why a man can’t have 19 wives.

Why?

Because it violates the "cruel and unusual punishment" clause of the Eighth Amendment.

exactly
so for those who say well I know a couple of gays they are nice,
doesn’t work
for those who say so what
well this just shows how so what attitude turns into

as for those who say Govt should not be involved well it should other wise we’ll have all sort of weird marriages and those who do have these will be asking for benefits

a line is drawn in the sand
on one side it says man and a woman like it has been for years upon years and then on the other side all other kinds of wacko marriages are not legal

When you throw out the religious, historical and cultural reasons for one man and one woman to define a marriage, well you do have a problem since other religions and cultures allow multiple wives.

So the question is that since all traditional tests used to define marriage are thrown out, what will be the test?

Honestly, I know people have strong anti-poligamy feelings. However, IMHO, it is one of the only ways that the West can survive demographically.
Flame away.

I do love my cat, but we are seriously gonna need to have a prenup. LOL. If we divorce I don’t want her takin’ all my money and spending it on cat treats! She is a treat addict even though they make her sick. Poor thing. My husband can’t quit feeding them to her though. No is not in his cat vocabulary. He would not do a prenup with her if he married her. Ah. I don’t even know why I wrote this post and why thoughts of my cat and her treats are pouring out like stupid words from Joe Biden’s mouth. The insanity of it all is getting to me. LOL.

Right or wrong. Most men could not handle more than one wife. The only way it could work is if they were all submissive and that ain't happenin’ anytime soon in America. I won't flame however I completely disagree with your thoughts on survival and polygamy.
