Climate-change alarmism runs into a reality check
Houston Chronicle ^ | Jan. 8, 2008 | ROBERT L. BRADLEY

Posted on 01/09/2009 6:28:47 AM PST by PROCON

The new century has cooled the case for climate alarmism. Global warming has stalled — not accelerated as expected. Greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere have increased, but temperatures have been flat for the last eight years and have slightly fallen since 1998's El Nino-driven temperature spike.

If the cool-off continues until 2015, as could be the case according to a study published in Nature magazine, we will have had a see-saw of global warming (1900-45), global cooling (1945-75), global warming (1975-98), and flatness (1998-2015).

Where does all of this leave us coming out of the Little Ice Age that ended in the mid-18th century — and after a century of greenhouse gas buildup in the atmosphere? Today's temperature is about 1 degree Fahrenheit warmer, and in a naturally warmer climate cycle. Compare this to Al Gore's scary talk about an 11-degree man-made temperature rise this century under business as usual.

One decade does not end the debate. But it is yet another data point against treating carbon dioxide as a pollutant and stringently regulating today's consumer-chosen energy economy. And it explains the desperation of those who accuse critics of climate catastrophism as being "deniers" (as in Holocaust deniers) and "flat earthers."

Of course the climate is changing — always has and always will — and there may very well be a distinct human influence on climate. Carbon dioxide is a warming agent, as are the other greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere from human activities. But the good news is that so far the observed climate sensitivity to greenhouse gases is much less than what some climate models predict.

I wonder if Mr. Bradley will be fired.

What's happening that the MSM appears to be waking up to the truth on this matter? Prior to the election they were towing the (Dem) party line.

The Earth was thought to be flat until science proved it wasn’t.
The Earth was thought to be the center of the Universe until science proved it wasn’t.
The Earth was thought to be 6000 years old until science proved it wasn’t.
The Earth was thought to be burning up with a “fever” until science proves it isn’t........

What changes is now The Obamasia is president. If MMGW was still a problem they would have to do something about it. Since that would complete the dist ruction of the economy. Since they don't want to take the heat for that they will just have their lackeys in the media say that MMGW is no longer a problem.

This is nothing new for Democrats. Remember the missile gap that got Kennedy elected, and then as soon as he was in office it turned out that the SS-6 that we were all worried about was great as a satellite launcher (still launching their ships today), but useless as weapons delivery system.

Remember the homeless problem that Clinton used to bash Bush the elder, that magically went away the day he was elected.

Remember how ethics in government was such a concern until the Queen Nancy took over and then it was "Just the way things get done".

.... a see-saw of global warming (1900-45) ....
Yeah the Global Warming in the 1940's was a bummer. It completely screwed up Germany's attack on Russia - the troops were dying from Heat Stroke right and left. And same for that little thing in Bastogne around Christmas of '44. The 101st Airborne couldn't dig foxholes, they kept filling up with water and mud. And it was soooo hot, the Troopers had to fight in their underwear!

an aside, my FIL was from Lithuania and he said every winter was harsh when he was growing up. It was ALWAYS well below zero.

Globular Warming is bullsheet.(sic)

Regardless of how many “scientists” agree, AGW is not science. The theory fails as science because the test of the theory is not repeatable primarily because the theory is untestable. The worshippers are left with devising their own faith-based tests to prove their beliefs. Much like when in 1690’s Salem only a witch would float after being thrown, hog-tied into a lake. The high-priests James Hanson and AlGore are modern day equivalents of Cotton Mather.

Oh ye of little faith, Earth's end is near.

After being around for 4,500,000,000 years, it can't last much longer.

Did all their wonderful computer models predict this flat-spot? The actual cooling in the last several years? Eh?

global warming alarmist are like the world overpopulation crowd. They have no sense of proportion. Yes I can see a point in the future, thousands of years into the future when every inch of earth land mass has a smoke pipe releasing tonnes of co2, but we’re no where near that point. Human population/activity is still quite small in relationship to earth

I have read that you could take EVERY person on earth and move them ALL to Texas and the population density would be no more than NYC’s...........

I figured it out once, its not hard.
If you decide that the avarge house would contain 4 people, and a house is on a 5000 square foot lot, you could fit every one on earth in Texas and a bit of Oklahoma.

Their computer models can’t reproduce known changes when actual observable data is plugged into the models. In other words, the models don’t reproduce what we already know has happened. Which should be all that one has to know to know that their predictions are wrong. The models are garbage.

If this is true, and by your example it seems to be entirely possible, we as a species have a looooong way to go to even get anywhere near “over population”...........

Global warming exists—If you go back as far to the ancient Ice Age.
However, the idea that the planet is somehow being subjected to a radical change in climate from man made activity is ridiculous, unfounded, unprovable and flies in the face of the traditional rules of scientific hypotheseis and theory.
It’s disgusting to “grunt” level scientists (like myself) that so many high profile scientists would sell-out and embrace this climate change garbage.
Good call Sgt Schultze!

If someone assessed our lives at retirement based on what we did in only the 5 years before retirement, they might have a skewed opinion of how we got there and what sacrifices and pain we endured on the way. This whole political storm over AGW is based on some arbitrary start date and a few less than reliable temperature measurements that go back only 150 years - just a tick on the Earth's timescale. You're right, if we measure from some colder period, we can in fact deduce warming. But why not go back further?

A more honest and accurate case could be made if we were to take our original models back to day 1 in Earth's existence. I think the understanding is that the planet then was inhospitably hot and filthy. It was certainly much hotter and less livable than where we are today. A trendline based at that point would show a planet that is cooling and becoming cleaner.

If you think of GHG as insulation rather than as a furnace then it becomes obvious that it cannot warm the surface at all; it merely keeps the warmth wrapped closer, clouds provide a much more direct influence by blocking most radiation both directions.

The real mystery that needs to be solved is how are the clouds affected by this trapped heat.

I never have thought they know what they’re doing.
