Republicans to flee DC for inauguration By: Jonathan Martin January 2, 2009 05:52 AM EST
While millions descend on Washington for the historic inauguration of Barack Obama on January 20, some Republicans see it as an occasion to get out of town.
Out of power on both ends of Pennsylvania Ave and mostly out of favor on K Street, many emasculated elephants in the GOP herd will begin the Age of Obama with what amounts to an extended holiday vacation. Instead of fighting the quadrennial cold and what are expected to be record-setting crowds, they're heading out to greener pastures, with better temperatures, less hassle and more agreeable company.
What better way to mark the Obama Inauguration (and his millions of adoring fans that will be in DC) than to get out of town to fabulous Las Vegas! wrote Charlie Spies, a Republican lawyer and former CFO to Mitt Romneys campaign in a blast email to GOP friends. We hope you can join us for dinner and a fun evening on Monday, January 19th to celebrate the last few hours of our Republican president in the White House.
Spies and his wife Lisa, a Republican fund-raiser, have gotten about 15 takers so far for this last supper or, as they billed it in the e-mail, their own Inaugural in Exile.
Theyre far from alone. Others will usher in the new era from the slopes, the islands, the NFL playoffs and even on a serendipitously-timed honeymoon. Full Democratic control of Washington may be a bitter pill, but its easier to get down from a lodge, beach, 50-yard-line or, especially, honeymoon suite.

How can they emasculate an elephant that was already a balless wonder?
So the Party of the Stupid is now fleeing for its life.
I can’t stop laughing at this tragicomedy.
Initially, I too thought deep snow would be great. But upon further reflection, I have decided a very cold, non-stop, drenching rain would best satisfy my soul.
The secret service isn’t partial to umbrella’s either.
Ok, how ‘bout we split the difference. A deep snow to begin with that immediately turns into a cold, drenching rain. Something for everyone.
My favorite is frozen fog, we have some bridges that cross a river near Wasilla Alaska, the river never freezes totally especially with a 20 foot tide and when its real cold like right now we get this frozen fog right over the bridge, as soon as you drive through it everything gets coated in ice, instantly.
Good name for a drink.
Well, that's chump change compared to what they are going to be missing in a few years.
Be sure not to look back, to avoid the appearance of salt.
No sane person is going to be on the streets of DC for this event. A great time to vacation in the sun and to avoid flak from the celebatory gunfire.
My daughter lives in a D.C. suburb about 30 miles out and they are leaving for the week. Said they don’t want to be anywhere near the place. Her husband has been given the week off from work. How crazy is that?
I predict the mall will see piles of trash and diapers etc never before seen following an inauguration.
Call me racist ( I don’t care anymore ) but when the blacks have their big parties in my town, it’s like a garbage dump afterwards. 300,000 people on St. Patrick’s Day leave less trash than 5000 blacks when they had their Orange Crush parties.
Be sure and install some heavy deadbolts and burglar bars, pack up your valuables, and then get out of town.
room for 5 humans and 2 dogs? we may take you up on it!
Other than my own I have 1 Queen, 1 full and a couch. Two full baths besides mine. Not the lap of luxury but adequate.
