Yesterday - on December 18, the Memorial Chamber of Lowicz Jews has been solemnly opened in Lowicz (Poland). It's dedicated to those, who lived in th etown for several centuries, being its active citizens.
The event was the continuation of the action to promote history of the town.
The first step towards this goal was unvealing the memorial commemorating the Jewish and Polish citizens of Lowicz and also the Soviet POWs - all the victims of two forced labour camps located near Lowicz during WW2 - on December 18, 2007. (read more)
During the ceremony the mayor of the town - Krzysztof Jan Kalinski - gave a lecture about the history of Lowicz Jewry and the idea of the Chamber.
The Chamber shows the history od Lowicz Jews, since they came to the town for the first time, through creating the Jewish community and its intense development, its active participation in the social and economical live of the town in 19th and 20th century, until WW2 and the Holocaust (right before WW2 the Jewish population of Lowicz was 1/3 of the total population of the town).
The guests attending the event had also a chance to listen to the concert given by the band "Di Kuzine" - playing traditional Jewish music. The audience liked it very much and gave the musicians a big applause.

Anyone read “Everything is Illuminated” or seen the movie? I recommend both but read the book first.
Just read the synopsis at Amazon and some reviews, sounds very interesting. FR ought to have a movie critique corner of some sorts, it's too hard to find good stuff and when one has some guidance, particularly by folks like FReepers, it would be a good thing. Thanks for the recommendation.

I saw the movie and was pulled into it, at the end I remember thinking how much I liked the film.....

I’ve seen the movie. It was one of those movies that I caught while flipping channels and it just drew me in.
I found out some info on the author, Jonathan Safran Foer, when I was looking for info on Jews and vegetarianism. I had already gone vegan for my health, but seeing his videos (http://www.goveg.com/jsfkosher.asp) opened my eyes to what goes on in the kosher slaughter houses. Living in Iowa with the Agriprocessors mess, it just reinforces my resolve to stay vegan for health, for the animals, and for my conscience.
I converted to Judaism some years ago. Part of my conversion ceremony mentioned taking the place of a Jew who died in the Holocaust. I keep that in mind when I see stories like this. I don’t know the name of ‘my’ person, but I think of him/her often.
Strange story - turns out I have a connection to Hitler via a German grad school adviser. Kinda freaked me out when I found out about it.
And to think that this was nearly stolen from the world, even worse there are still those who would do so.
