Israeli sub sighted near Arabian Sea
Pakistan Observer ^

Posted on 12/15/2008 2:32:12 PM PST by maquiladora

Islamabad—Authoritative sources have reported that unidentified submarine was sighted in the Arabian Sea several kilometres away from Balochistan coast and sources claimed that submarine in question was most probably from Israel.

Several foreign states are already massing naval forces in the area but the presence of Israeli submarines was seen as a joint Indo-Israeli strategy to increase pressure on Pakistan. It was though not clear if Israeli sub was on its way to Indian Ocean or on surveillance exploration in the area.

Defence experts say that Israeli Navy has recently fitted its Dolphin class submarine with hi-tech gadgets to enhance surveillance. The Israeli submarine can carry a team of special operation forces and travels at maximum speeds of 20 knots with a cruising range of 4,500 nautical miles. The vessel is also equipped with 10 torpedo tubes and is capable of launching Harpoon missiles,

According to regional defence experts Israeli submarine is believed to be armed with two types of cruise missiles — the Popeye Turbo, with a range of 200 kilometres, and the longer-range Delilah, which reportedly can hit targets up to 400 kilometres.

I'd take this report with a heavy pinch of salt, but still, it's interesting. Could be seeing an Israeli cruise missile attack on targets in Pakistan after the Mumbai attacks where Israelis were killed? Or perhaps something to do with Iran....?

If it makes a few Jihadi sphincters clench, let them spread all the rumors they want.

..a heavy pinch of salt..

Actually no, I was wondering when some report might come out.

IIRC, the Israelis have 3 of these subs.

Perhaps they leave one in the Med near home.

But the other two, logically, the Arabian Sea.

And, with the entente between Israel and India, they could even have port calls, or be resupplied by Milk Ships from India if needed, all the time preserving one heck of a surprise attack potential.

Popeye Turbo cruise missiles are an appropriate weapon system for the Israeli navy, which is small but plucky and strong to the finichk. They are well suited for taking out Iran's Blutonium reprocessing facilities.
