Survey: Teens sharing nude images online
Today / MSNBC ^ | 12/10/2008

When it comes to sex, tech and teens don't make the best bedfellows. As tech-savvy teens become increasingly fluent with new technology, from social networking sites to tricked-out new cell phones, research finds the negative consequences stacking up.

According to the results of a survey released today by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy and CosmoGirl.com, 22 percent of all teen girls — and 11 percent of teen girls ages 13-16 years old — say they have electronically sent, or posted online, nude or semi-nude images of themselves.

And these racy images are also getting passed around: One-third (33 percent) of teen boys and one-quarter (25 percent) of teen girls say they have had nude/semi-nude images — originally meant to be private — shared with them.

You said — “If your kids share any of these images on the home computer, the images can be retrieved from the hard drive even if you believe you “deleted” them. Should the authorities ever look on the computer and find these images, get ready to register as a sex offender for a very long time after you get out of prison.”

Anyone should be concerned about deleting things from their computer for various reasons. One good one is if you sell the computer or replace the hard drive. If the hard drive is shot and replaced, you should take a sledge hammer and pound it into pieces, especially the inside platters. Make a real mess of it. That’s assuming that it doesn’t work any more and you can’t do a real good “scrubbing” of the hard drive.

Otherwise, there are programs that are available to really scrub the hard drives. The more effective you want it, the longer it’s going to take. But, that wouldn’t be a bad idea, in any case.

However, concerning pictures that your kids send, that could be a problem. If you’re concerned, you can get a program that can monitor all the activity on your computer. It’s spyware, but it will do the job. You’ll, at least, know what’s going on and if you have to do anything about it.

But, as far as the “kid culture” is concerned, the situation is bad and a lot is going on. Whether you think so or not, with your own kids — it more than likely *is* going on.

I mean, I can talk to some kids in the family about what is going on with “so and so” — somewhat distantly removed and I can be told, “Yeah, she thinks because her daughter is going to a good Christian school that she’s not doing anything. She doesn’t know what ‘so-and-so’ and her boyfriend are doing.” And this is supposedly from a “real good kid”, you see...

And from what I’ve read on prior threads and other things that are going on in our culture, this is a massive problem. The entire culture is hyper-sexualized and the kids are going right along with it — and I mean *kids* — like 10-11-12-13 and up...

It’s a bad situation...

If your kids share any of these images on the home computer, the images can be retrieved from the hard drive even if you believe you “deleted” them.

1. Search your hard drive for .jpg and other image extensions. Any extensions in a non-standard area need to be examined. 2. Delete them and then use a tool like 'Windows Washer' to eradicate any evidence that it was ever on your hard drive.

If I hadn’t served my time putting up with 35 years of employment and all the BS that goes along with it, I would wish that I was a teenager again.........Nope, it ain’t worth it.

I hear there are some pics of a teen-aged Helen Thomas, but the archaeologists won't let you in the cave to look at them.

You with your four tool belts, me with my walker and blue hair. *sigh*

Oh wait. I probably shouldn’t say anything on an open forum, huh.

I've never done this before, but the best way I can think of too scrub a hard drive forever is to expose it to a bearing heater for several minutes.

I am a big fan of Evidence Eliminator and use it a maintenance utility to clean the stuff off that Windows says it does and doesn't.

I have one from Helen Thomas want me to post it

Over my dead body. Which is what will probably be the case if you do post it. Severe dehydration due to vomiting.

It is amazing what they can recover even from a warped drive.

****All these cellphone cameras make it really difficult to have a good time and get away with it scot-free*****

Ah for the days of the Polaroid Land Camera and Polaroid Swinger Camera.

I still remember the scandal in Roswell NM back about 1966 when some local girls posed nude for the camera, and in Tulsa 1976 when one of my working companions showed up with polaroid photos of his wife. WOW!

I cannot imagine how embarrassed she is/was.

Probably not much embarrassed at all, or she wouldn't be broadcasting such photos.

1 - Wipe
2 - Degauss
3 - Thermite
4 - Garbage can.

If you're paranoid.

The boys and girls at MSNBC and other Old Media outlets are certainly doing the same thing.

It is one thing to send them to a boyfriend, and quite another to send them to his father. I may be out of touch, but I would imagine she will be embarrassed when she comes to visit again.

You said — “I’ve never done this before, but the best way I can think of too scrub a hard drive forever is to expose it to a bearing heater for several minutes.”

If you’re serious about really destroying the data on a failed drive and are concerned about measures that a government can take to retrieve it — then I would break that platter up into pieces and obliterate it — and then get rid of the pieces in many different places, scattered around.

If you did that — it would end up just about 100% secure no matter what... LOL...

It really depends on how serious you are... :-)

If it’s a working drive, you can use some effective scrubbers and ones that can really destroy the data and it can’t be retrieved (but it will take a while, a long while). Then you can use it again, without fear of the data being resurrected.
