Berkowitz concedes defeat in US House race (Alaska)

Democrat Ethan Berkowitz conceded defeat in his challenge to Congressman Don Young on Tuesday.

Trailing by more than 16,000 votes, Berkowitz called Young to congratulate him on his victory.

But Berkowitz hinted strongly that he may run again in the future if Young doesn't do well in the Democrat-controlled Congress.

"I've got to digest all the numbers and see what happened, but there is a whole host of reasons it happened," Berkowitz said. "I'm proud of the fact that we have, at this point, more votes than any other Democrat running in history except for Mark Begich.

"I'm proud of the fact that we ran a campaign that is based on issues, based on values, based on direction, and I think that helped elevate the quality and tone of this race, and I am proud of that."

Berkowitz says his immediate plans include working on renewable energy projects.

He’ll start his 2010 campaign before the sun sets. And in Alaska that’s a major event!

So, how does this affect the rest of us?

Don't get me wrong ... I'm always glad to see a Demoncrat defeated and ideally some RHINO’s in the future ... but will this allow us to filibuster?

Democrat Ethan Berkowitz conceded defeat in his challenge to Congressman Don Young on Tuesday.

Translation: There was a bit too much vote cushion for us to steal this one, but we will prolly be back with more dead folks next election.

House - no fillibuster
Senate - fillibuster with 41 votes

This was a house race.

There are 6 hours of daylight if you call a yellowish pale light at noon daylight. Three hours of sunrise followed by three hours of sunset. It’s -12 right now, and normal for this date is 1.

Yes. 1 is shirtsleeves weather for quick missions. -10 is cold. -20 is really cold and a lot of people don’t like it and I have to fire up the woodstove. -40 is really really cold and the tires become square. -60 even ravens want the door shut.

Was Begich a stronger candidate than Berkowitz? The Young-Berkowitz races wasn’t even close.

I would have to say Begich is very strong. He attracts a lot of otherwise Conservative votes because he is Conservative for a Democrat. He would be to the right of many of our Republicans in DC.

That’s good to know.

Considering the entire govt is Democrat now, it is probably better for Alaska’s parochial interests (keep the pork flowing) to have a Democrat in Congress now, although Stevens would have been helpful for the filibuster and such.

Not so much as the $5 million the DEMS dropped on Markie for ads, and so on.

Chuckie Schumer sent one of his top managers up here to run the cam-pain for Markie.

Don’t much care for him as a mayor, and in DC he will be all but worthless as far as shaking the money tree.

So I guess you could say it was a lose-lose election all around.
