It is so very wrong.

“They already do that in California”

Yes, and then they imported it to Colorado. 15 years ago they tried it out in my daughter’s high school and recruited kids who were at the top of their classes. They put the kids on this bizarre program that included building a “Portfolio” but didn’t include the standard Math, Science, and English lessons. Instead it included requirements like community service. AND the community service had to be in their “approved” programs, not just any 401c(3) organization.

When I found out about this program, I told them that I wanted my daughter taken out and put back into regular classes. They said that once the child started in this program they couldn’t go back. I was furious and I took her out of school for homeschooling until I could arrange a move to some other state. We moved to Allen, Texas where they had traditional education.

If that’s what Obama wants to do, more and more kids won’t be able to read but will still graduate with honors!

And Washington... I agree, they have no right.

They already do that in California.

Must only be in certain parts of it. We've lived in several different cities and not one school has even mentioned 'manadatory volunteering'.

Decisions like this are made at the local level in most states. The school board votes yea or nay. There have been 13th amendment challenges but they have not been successful. The change here is the central government mandating to the local level.

The next step would be a "fair" distribution of local taxes into other districts. Nassau County abuts NYC along the Queens line. RE taxes in Nassau are triple those of a similar house in Queens. As a result Nassau has world class schools (except three or four in black districts). NYC schools suck on every level.

A "fair" distribution of these tax dollars would not bring NYC schools up, it would bring Nassau schools down and drive home owners out.

In California, do the students get assigned duties for community service or do they get to choose a project of their own liking?
