I could never quite decide if this was a real issue, or if Obama and gang were sitting on a legitimate birth certificate just because it bugged us and gave them the chance to release it and ridicule McCain as a tool of the "right wing kooks" if he ever questioned it. The third option of having a real BC but a confusing history of name changes, questionable paternity and multiple Kenyan/Indonesian/US citizenships was just easier to avoid by trying to bury the issue altogether.
Throw on top of that people following red herrings of fonts and image strangeness on the certification of live birth that could be explained by the fact that it was beaten to death by JPEG compression leaving all sorts of image artifacts on it.
