Okay, I just have to state my opinion on this. When I was 19 I was attacked by a pit bull and still have the scar on my leg 25 years later.

I would NEVER EVER own a pit bull and I wonder why someone would purchase a pit pull puppy as a pet. There is too much liability and risk involved and it is not worth it.

Pit bulls can make wonderful pets and I do not fear them. I have been around many pit bulls in the last 20 years and have never been attacked again.

The problem is the type of people these dogs (generally speaking) attract. People who have no business owning any dog much less a pit bull.

Gang members, low income families who can't even take care of their own kids tend to think it is cool to have a pit bull for the status.

Any dog can bite and dogs bite for different reasons.

Pit bulls do not have lock jaw but just as a lab as bred to retrieve, a pit bull’s instincts are to go for the head/neck and hold on. They can be very friendly, outgoing and non aggressive. The only problem is it only takes one bite to cause severe damage or death.

They, like any dog, become much more dangerous when left alone with other dogs in a back yard or to run loose in packs.

You can outlaw them in cities and put as many restrictions on owners as you want. You can raise the license fee as high as you want but it will not keep certain people from owning a pit bull. It has been my experience that most law abiding people who are willing to abide by the city regulations for owning a pit bull are not the problem.

It is the people who's motives are to fight the dog or to own a tough looking for symbolism that have damaged this breed and made it popular. Unfortunately, it is the innocent victims that pay the price for their ignorance and irresponsible behavior.

I have been training guide dog puppies for the blind for ten years and I have a lab and a German Sheppard.

My Sheppard and lab are both therapy dogs and very gentle but I would never leave them alone unattended with children. They have never shown aggression but I would never tell someone they would never bite.
I love my babies but they are dogs and will always be a chance that they could bite for any number of reasons.

There, I have said my peace based on my knowledge and experiences.

Point taken. I asked the mods to remove my post.

It seems it was a chorus of Banjo's that I heard, not just a pair.

The whole family are idiots.

Aw, you just confused the pair sucking on corn cob pipes with the banjo players.

There are lovely pits. There are horribly dangerous ones.

I found a stray pit myself. I put it in the yard, fed and watered it, and called the vet name I found on it’s collar. The owner came and collected it.

During that time I spent no extra time with it. I did not let my kids go in the yard. It would not have mattered if it was a rottie, a lab, a terrier or a collie.

Stray dogs are unknown quantities. You NEVER leave a young child alone with a large dog, sometimes as much to protect the dog as much as the child.

I trust my dogs implicitly. One day one got mad at the other and removed the scalp at the top of his head.

A dog is not a person. It has all the baggage of not being able to think like a human and all the instincts of an animal, and the child is the most precious possession you have. To leave a strange dog with your baby is incredibly foolish.

Last Friday I took my (homeschooled) four children out to IHOP for our once-a-month restaurant treat with my buy-one-get-one-meal free coupon. As we were leaving out the front door, two large loose pitbulls (off leashes, no collars, and no owners anywhere to be seen) suddenly bounded up the front sidewalk, and jumped up on my children who were at my side. I yelled to everyone coming out behind us and getting out of their vehicles ahead of us that two pits were loose, and to not come outside. I sent my children back into the restaurant, and made a run for it to our car, watching the lobby fill up with people (along with my own children I told to stay put), as these two stupid pitbulls held everyone hostage. One older lady finally got out of her car next to me, and started beating one of the pits with her cane, God love her! If it wasn’t so terrifying, it would have been funny.

Someone scared the dogs away finally, and everyone began exiting the restaurant, as my children ran to the car. I called Animal Control, who promptly came and took the dogs away.

Pitbull ownership should be the same as owning a lion or tiger. People are dying and being mauled (mostly children and babies) regularly in this country by pitbulls. I don’t understand why we’re not seeing more laws like I know about in certain parts of Florida, that makes pitbull ownership a crime. Enough is enough.

Sharks arn’t evil either. I just don’t like bringing them home and letting the kids swim with them in the pool.

Yeah, poor Grandma. Can you imagine having to live with something like this? She was trying to do the dog a kindness.

Stupid, but not intentionally.

Noooooo, I’m sure she didn’t bring a stray dog home and leave her 2 yr old granddaughter with it in order to bite her face off......but ACTIONS have CONSEQUENCES. THINK....it’s an old fashioned idea.

Grandma is as dumb as a bag of hair.

That must mean a "yes" to the question at post 5.

Thank you. Someone who actually read the article. The judgmental posts on this thread are why conservatives have the reputation that they do. This was a horrible accident that yes, could have been avoided.

My heart goes out to this family.
